Last night, stars stepped out for a night of glitz and glam for this year’s Emmy Awards. One starlett in particular, Quinta Brunson stole the night. As one of the most in-demand, rising stars in Hollywood, Brunson made history before the night even began by becoming the first black female nominated for awards in the actor, writer and producer categories for her critically-acclaimed show Abbott Elementary. At last night’s awards, Quinta took home her very first Emmy for best comedy writing. For a show-stealing night, you have to have a show-stealing look and Brunson’s was nothing short of perfection. Haute Beauty spoke to her amazing make-up artist, Renée Loiz, and got all the deets on the actress’s look and how you can achieve the look at home.
Haute Beauty: How do you prep Quinta’s skin before a big event like the Emmys?
Renée Loiz: Before a big event like the Emmys, Quinta not only preps her skin on the day of, but the night before as well. On the night before the Emmys, Quinta likes to use OLAY’s Retinol24 Collection. Quinta starts by cleansing her skin using OLAY’s Regenerist Retinol24 Facial Cleanser, followed by a few drops of the OLAY Retinol24 Night Serum on her face and neck to hydrate the skin. To firm and even her skin tone, she dabs a generous amount of her OLAY Retinol24 Night Eye Cream under her eyes. Lastly, Quinta uses her OLAY Retinol24 + Peptide Night Face Moisturizer to ensure she wakes up with smoother, brighter skin on the morning of the big day!
The morning of, Quinta preps her skin with a non-irritating face wipe. Because she has sensitive skin, her favorite wipes are OLAY’s Daily Facial Cleansing Dry Cloths. Once she’s ready for makeup, she’ll prime her skin with YouthForia Pregame Setting Spray. In order to get her glowing on the red carpet, I always use the OLAY Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum on her face, neck, and under eyes. As a final touch to soothe Quinta on her big day, I like to use the Revolve Contouring Massage Roller, which helps the serum penetrate deeper into the skin, as well as shape and sculpt her face, neck, and under eyes.
HB: Does this routine differ from her typical everyday routine?
RL: Some of Quinta’s additional can’t-live-without essentials for her everyday look include the Benefit brow pencil and gel, the Westman Atelier complexion drops foundation, and the InnBeauty Project Glaze Lip Oil. Quinta also likes to use both Pat McGrath mascara and ILIA mascara, and of course, Glossier’s tinted serum foundation and cheek gel!
HB: It’s a big night for Quinta. When it comes to her makeup, what is your inspiration for this year’s Emmys?
RL: Quinta’s dress inspired the overall makeup look. I want to play into the bronze, copper, and gold tones and the lustrous texture of the dress. I want her eyes to look wet, almost like vinyl to tie the look together.

HB: Can you walk us through the details of the look?
RL: I like to use Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Complexion Drops as a base. Quinta is a big fan of the Fenty Beauty Bright Fix Eye Brightener, so I’ll use that for a touch of color correction to brighten and prep her eyes for concealer. When I’m done, I like to set her face by using Westman Atelier Vital Pressed Skincare Powder in the shades ‘Dune’ and ‘Cafe’ so that her skin comes through soft and luminous. ‘Dune’ will be used under the eyes to set the concealer, and ‘Cafe’ will be patted into Quinta’s T-zone to set her makeup. On her cheeks, I like to use Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick in ‘Bichette’ mixed with Westman Atelier Lit Up Highlight Stick in Brûlée for the perfect sun-kissed bronzer glow. To contour, I’ll apply Danessa Myrick Balm Contour under her cheekbone. A cream product is preferred when contouring because it melts into the skin and doesn’t leave harsh detectable streaks of color!
Next, I’ll fill her brows in with the Westman Atelier Bonne Brow Defining Pencil in ‘Bark’ and ‘Slate’. I like to use two different shades to add dimension and texture. ‘Bark’ will be used to shape out her full brow and I’ll add flicks of ‘Slate’ in to mimic brow hairs.
Quinta already has beautiful eyes, so to enhance her eyes and compliment her gorgeous outfit, I will apply a copper shadow all over the lids, and then use Westman Atelier Eye Pod Single in Champagne to achieve a wet look without using a gloss, which can sometimes move the eyeshadow underneath. To fill in any sparse areas between Quinta’s top lashes, I will use Juvia’s Place I Line, I Define Pen Eyeliner. This will help give the illusion of thicker eyelashes! As the last step, I will apply individual Kasha faux lashes to enhance and elongate Quinta’s lashes while still giving her a very natural feel.
For a final touch, I’ll define Quinta’s lips with Mented Cosmetics Lip Liner in Bare to perfectly match her natural lip tone. I’ll then apply the Westman Atelier Squeaky Clean Liquid Lip Balm in Garconne, which will keep her lips hydrated and sheer. I love this tinted lip balm because it will keep the focus on her copper eyes and add a subtle hint of baby plum to bring the whole look together. Once we’re finished, I’ll be sure to touch her up right before she heads down that red carpet!
HB: What can our readers do to achieve Quinta’s look at home?
RL: You can easily achieve this look as long as you have a copper, bronze and/or gold eyeshadow. Dampen your eyeshadow brush, press into the eyeshadow palette, and apply all over your eyelid, from lashline to crease. The color will be intense and will dry with a beautiful sheen. Apply mascara on top and bottom lashes, sweep bronzer over the high points of your face (where the sun naturally hits, cheekbones, bridge of nose, and forehead), and lastly apply a lip balm or gloss that mimics your natural lip color.
HB: Any final beauty/skincare tips for our readers?
RL: Always remember to take care of your skin first! Have a skincare regimen and be consistent with it day and night. And please don’t go to sleep with your makeup on! Healthy skin equals flawless makeup.
And there you have it. Thank you so much, Renée for speaking with us and letting us in on all the magic that is Quinta Brunson. We can’t wait to continue to watch you and Quinta reach new heights!
