Are you living an extra sweaty lifestyle? One where you have episodes of excessive sweat at least once a week without any explanation? This, my friends can be a sign of hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating. Due to the condition’s commonality and its effect on your social life or daily activities, Haute Beauty sat down with Nurse Practioner Daphne Duran at Skin Spa New York (Flatiron & Midtown East) to discuss a popular treatment option: Botox. Here’s what she shared:
What is the main cause of hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is not caused by exercise or related to body temperature. Excessive sweating can be to the underarms, face, or other extremities. It’s still very unclear what causes this, but it’s thought to be related to our nervous system and also can be genetic. Triggers can include anxiety, thyroid hormones, infections, certain medications, and even stress.
How does Botox help excessive sweating?
In 2004 the FDA approved the use of Botox to treat severe cases of ancillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the underarms) in patients unable to obtain relief using antiperspirants. Botox uses botulinum toxin to block nerve receptors and signals responsible for sweating. Magic! This decreases sweating therefore, no more sweat pits, ruined clothes, and no more being conscious of smell.

How many units of Botox are needed for it to be helpful?
The units of Botox can vary depending on the body part we are treating. For hyperhidrosis of the underarms, 50-100 units of Botox may need to be used on each arm. If you want to treat sweaty palms, 50 units of Botox to both palms will need to be used. For the chin area, 8-10 units will be used.
How long does the Botox effect on hyperidrosis last?
It can take 2-4 days to see the results of Botox treatment for underarms. Botox effects can last anywhere between 7-12 months. You will require booster injections in order to keep results.
Are there any other options for hyperhidrosis?
There are other options for hyperhidrosis, including prescription wipes, deodorants, creams, and treatments such as MiraDry and Morpheus8. Botox treatment is worth it for most of my clients. It allows them to go about their day feeling confident and comfortable.
