The first (and currently only) FDA-approved prescription injectable, QWO, indicated to treat severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women has gained major popularity due to its many benefits. As it spreads nationwide to different doctor’s offices and Med Spa’s, we at Xanadu Med Spa are very excited to be one of the first QWO providers in Colorado. If interested in the QWO treatment, it is best to know the facts, here they are:
How does QWO Work?
To understand how QWO works, you must know was cellulite is. Cellulite is caused by fibrous bands that have a finite length that attach the muscular structure to the skin. When the fat pushes against the skin but there isn’t enough “give,” with that fibrous band, it results in the dimpling of the skin we call cellulite.
Cellulite is not fat. It is not caused by what you eat. It can not go away with exercise. It is simply a matter of DNA. Some women have it, and some don’t. QWO does three distinct things. It releases and breaks down those fibrous bands, then it comes in and redistributes the fat cells surrounding those bands, and finally, it stimulates collagen production to help fill in that space.
What are the benefits?
We also provide Cellfina treatments at Xanadu Med Spa. This procedure is semi-invasive and goes in and cuts those fibrous bands. Cellfina treatment is similar to QWO but the major benefit of QWO is it is non-invasive. At each injection point, the treatment is injected by a small needle. It is relatively painless and requires no downtime following the procedure.
Within 10 weeks after the treatment, patients will see a dramatic improvement in the smoothness of the skin as those cellulite dimples are released, the fat cells are redistributed, and new collagen is stimulated at that injection site.

How many treatments are needed?
QWO works through a series of at least 3 injections in the same location spaced 21 days apart. Injections take less than 15 minutes, so it literally can be a lunchtime appointment.
Who is a good candidate for QWO?
It is important to remember that QWO is indicated for cellulite and is not a treatment for laxity. Patients with well-defined cellulite dimples will be good candidates. Laxity and that “cottage cheesy” rippled skin is not actually cellulite. We do have other treatments to address those issues.
What is QWO recovery like?
Most patients will not experience much pain with this procedure, however, it almost always results in severe bruising at the injection sites. Some patients might experience nodules beneath the skin that dissipate on their own over a time frame. Almost all recipients can resume daily activity following this procedure – one of the advantages of this non-invasive approach.
When is it suggested to get this done to be summer-ready?
Given the number of QWO treatments and providing time for the potential bruising to resolve, it would be a good idea to provide a full three months before putting on that bikini. Given that, the winter months provide an excellent time frame in which to receive this treatment.
What other treatments can it be paired with?
As mentioned earlier, QWO will take care of those cellulite dimples. If you would like to also work at smoothing the skin and improving laxity we offer BodyFX. We also provide EvolveX – which can either target fat reduction or provide muscle growth and stimulation (or both at the same time). For a full booty makeover, a combination of these treatment options can create a “bootiful” outcome.
