My greatest achievement:
Is the success of my skincare line, Karyng. In my practice, I’ve recognized that inflammation is the root of numerous skin concerns and have seen a need for products that address this. I created Karyng Skincare after witnessing the long-term effects of skin inflammation throughout the aging process. I also wanted to provide a solution to my patients’ passionate quest for safe, natural and effective products that are both manufactured and assembled right here in the U.S. Karyng’s active, high-performance ingredients target the key signs of aging: fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, uneven pigmentation, inflammation and dullness to help deliver a fresh, youthful appearance.
The biggest misconception about my field is…
That a cosmetic procedure should yield obvious results. Many people have beautiful work that is undetectable to the average person. Instead of changing your looks, you can use modern techniques to look more refreshed and less tired.
My most requested procedures are:
actually combinations of different procedures that we use together to achieve a more comprehensive rejuvenation. As a provider, I focus on making my patients look natural and refreshed through subtle change. Addressing the needs of an individual patient in a comprehensive way is what gives the best results. Muscle contraction, tone and texture, laxity and volume loss all need to be addressed in a balanced way. In my line of work, subtlety is in high demand – this requires a discerning and artistic eye.
What surgical advancements are you most excited about?
I’m most excited about the advancement of noninvasive and minimally invasive contouring/fat reducing procedures for both face and body. Radiofrequency skin tightening procedures are on the cutting edge. When I began my career, if a patient wanted tighter skin, the only option was a scalpel (facelift). Then, came Thermage, which was the first external, non-invasive skin tightening procedure. Almost two decades later, it is very exciting to see the plethora of techniques available, which range from external skin tightening to radiofrequency energy emitted through microneedles and cannulas placed underneath the skin. Dermatologists can now offer a range of treatments ranging from the ultimate “prejuvenation” to effective skin tightening for more mature patients.
What are you best known for?
I’m passionate about my field and love taking the time to educate each new patient about the process of aging and what all of their different treatment options are – from most aggressive to least aggressive. I believe in patients participating in their own treatment plans and that educating patients about all of their different options helps them to be informed and make the best decisions. Knowledge is power. My patients also compliment my artistry. I never follow “the book” on treatments and procedures. I prefer subtle changes to help patients look like themselves – but better!
What is your most memorable patient reaction?
The first flowers I ever received came a few months after I began my practice. I performed laser resurfacing on a woman whose husband was not supportive of her decision to have the procedure. Three weeks after her procedure, four dozen long-stemmed red roses were delivered to my office with a note from her husband that said “thank you for making my wife look like she did when I married her.”
What sets my practice apart?
Honesty is integral in my approach. I would never recommend a procedure to a patient that I wouldn’t perform on myself or my own family. Unlike other facilities where staff members are required to hit a quota for procedures sold, I’ve always felt that beauty is optional. We educate patients about their options and help guide them into making the best choices for themselves.
What I love most about my profession is:
That I get to have the ultimate STEAM job. I am lucky to be able to use the latest technology and help develop new laser systems and procedures; yet I have the privilege of being able to exercise creativity and an artful eye in helping to reshape patients’ bodies or create more beauty in a particular face. There is a lot of right and left brain balance in my job and I love it! My kids always tell me I set a high bar for them – career wise. They want to know how they are ever going to find a job that they love as much as I love mine!
Career defining procedure?
My practice has been recognized for the way that we blend different techniques and modalities – not for a particular procedure or technique. In dermatology I’ve always employed a combination of products and techniques to get the most natural and best possible results for my patients.
What new services are you excited to offer?
My patients are very pleased with results of the Accutite procedure, which uses a tiny cannula to deliver heat underneath the skin to tighten nasolabial folds, jowls, and the area around the eyes.
