Maintain Your Health At Work With These Tips

Haute MD, MD News September 13, 2019 By Sarah Head

Staying active is always a good goal to have, but can be a difficult one to maintain if you’ve got a very busy life. If you feel like you sit too much during the workday, but aren’t sure how to go about fitting in more activity to your busy schedule, the American Heart Association has some tips for introducing more movement into your workday.

Creating a healthy environment at work is paramount to maintaining personal health, so the American Heart Association wants you to “move more” with these tips:

  • Walk during breaks, and use longer breaks to stroll outdoors, whether down the street or laps around the building.
  • A midday walk during a lunch break can help the mind to focus on the afternoon’s work.
  • Stand during meetings.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Walk to talk with a co-worker in person rather than using the phone or electronic messaging.
  • Take public transportation to work instead of driving. It likely involves walking to and from the transit stop.
  • Use standing or adjustable height desks to avoid sitting while on the phone or at the computer.
  • Exercise at your desk, with squats or jumping jacks.

Make sure to ask your company what perks they offer to assist you in creating a healthier work environment because all the small steps you take can lead to long-term benefits. Change doesn’t have to start with a lunchtime weightlifting routine but can begin with parking slightly farther away than normal, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and having a lunchtime stroll with coworkers.
