Haute Beauty: What is skin resurfacing?
Dr. Aanand Geria: Skin resurfacing is a method of removing the top layers of damaged skin to reveal brighter more youthful skin underneath. This is usually accomplished by laser or medium depth chemical peel.
HB: Who is a good candidate, and is there any prep required by the patient?
AG: A good candidate is someone who wants to improve static (at rest) wrinkles or acne scarring. This is not meant for dark-skinned patients due to the risk of scarring and discoloration. There is no specific preparation other than using numbing cream beforehand to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
HB: What are the main reasons patients get this procedure?
AG: Patients seeking to brighten their skin generally inquire about resurfacing. They know that resurfacing can help create smooth skin, diminish the appearance of dark spots, and help unclog pores.
HB: How long do results last?
AG: Results should be permanent although some people may require a maintenance treatment every couple years especially if they don’t protect their skin from the sun or smoke.
How long is recovery?
AG: Less aggressive resurfacing should only be 1 week of downtime, whereas more aggressive might require 2-3 weeks. The recovery will involve redness, swelling, and peeling which will reveal baby fresh skin underneath

HB: What are your favorite fall activities?
AG: I love going pumpkin picking with my nephews, spending time with family during Thanksgiving and watching movies by the fireplace.
HB: Where was your favorite travel destination this summer and why?
AG: This summer I went on a cruise to Alaska with my family. The scenery is absolutely stunning with all the snow-topped mountains and greenery. We also did some dog-sledding on top of a glacier which was truly a once in a lifetime experience. I strongly recommend anyone who’s interested to go as soon as possible before all the ice melts.
