Haute Beauty: What are some treatments patients in their 40s should try for healthier-looking skin?
Dr. Navin Arora: In our 40s, collagen production tends to slow down. In addition, the skin has less elasticity. These issues can be counteracted by using vitamin C to help build up collagen and reaching for retinol to treat fine lines.
HB: What major changes should those in their 40s make in their skincare routine?
NA: The integration of hydrating products is generally better in this age group, as studies show that lack of moisture actually contributes to the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
HB: What are some skincare mistakes those in their 40s make?
NA: Forgetting about daily sunblock use. You should expect to live another few more decades, so consistent sun protection is still as important as when you were young.
HB: What skin concerns should those in their 40s be aware of?
NA: This is the prime time to start developing precancers skin growths. In addition, women age 49 and under are more likely to develop melanoma than any other cancer except breast and thyroid cancers. So, being cognizant of new growths and having annual skin checks are vital to great overall skin health.
