Your smile says a lot about you.

As humans, we subconsciously relate the appearance of a person’s teeth to their personality. Take your canine teeth, for instance – pointier, more prominent canines indicate an aggressive, powerful personality, whereas more flattened or rounded tips suggest a passivity. And that’s just what two teeth are saying! What’s more, multiple research studies have revealed multiple benefits to having attractive teeth, from more success at getting a job or landing a promotion, to better interpersonal relationships.

If you want the benefits that have been shown to come with an attractive smile, or if you simply want to look and feel your best, you’ve probably considered how cosmetic dentistry can help you. You’re in luck: It’s entirely possible to make over your smile in a single visit. Whether you want to reshape your teeth, fix a gap or brighten up your smile, you can be in the office and out the door with a new look in practically no time.

Here are four options to consider:

Contouring
To create the illusion of straightened teeth or a less-crowded smile, your dentist can shape your teeth to achieve your desired outcome. During this process, abrasive strips are used to remove a minimal amount of enamel, with the focus typically being to round the edges of too-square teeth. After the sanding is complete, your teeth will be polished, shiny and smooth.

Bonding
If you have a chipped tooth, gaps, or teeth that are too short, your dentist can use bonding to sculpt the ideal tooth shape for your smile. A putty-like resin is applied to your tooth, which is then shaped and set with high-intensity light. Voila! Minor imperfections are instantly corrected.

Prepless Veneers
Prepless dental veneers provide the same aesthetic and functional benefits as porcelain veneers do, and are a good option for patients who want veneers but are hesitant to file down healthy tooth enamel (hence, “prepless”). This option appeals to many patients because the procedure can be reversed. If, in the future, you opt to have your prepless veneers removed, your natural teeth will look like they used to before dental veneers.

In-Office Whitening
For dramatic whitening that can last upwards of two years, your dentist can perform a laser or light-based bleaching treatment. The time necessary? Thirty minutes to an hour. Yes, you can actually whiten your teeth to a brilliant new shade on your lunch break. If you have sensitive teeth, your dentist can provide you with custom bleaching trays that you can use at home for a more gradual effect.
