The Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures In 2018

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is a highly respected organization that strives to promote the optimal level of training, ethics, practice and research in the specialty of plastic surgery—and they are also responsible for keeping track of the procedures their members perform. The 2018 numbers are in…

Of the 1.8 million plastic surgery procedures performed in 2018, three of the five most popular focus on the areas beyond the face, which is why ASPS has deemed 2018 the “Year of the Body,” and board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Moises Salama of Miami, Florida agrees. “The new ASPS statistics align with some procedures I personally performed in my practice last year, and there’s no question that patients turn to surgery for significant improvement and long-lasting results for a variety of body concerns. Even more, all of these face and body plastic surgery procedures have proven track records for safety and high rates of patient satisfaction, which is why they are consistently among the top five year after year.”

Perhaps you’re wondering if you contributed to these statistics, or maybe your considering plastic surgery in 2019—so without further ado, here they are…

Breast augmentation

#1: Breast augmentation
Number of procedures: 313,735
Percent change from 2017: Up 4%
The details: Breast augmentation involves inserting implants to enhance the size, shape and symmetry of a woman’s natural breasts. With various implant types, incision locations and implant-placement options, breast augmentation is customized for each patient’s unique anatomy, needs and desired outcomes.
Dr. Salama says: “I’m not surprised breast augmentation took the number-one plastic surgery spot yet again, as this procedure has a tremendous impact on a woman’s self-esteem. The recovery is also much easier that patients anticipate, and most are able to return to work within five days as long they avoid lifting and other strenuous activity.”

Liposuction

#2: Liposuction
Number of procedures: 258,558
Percent change from 2017: Up 5%
The details: Liposuction is performed by inserting a long metal tube called a cannula through small incisions in order to loosen unwanted fat before it is removed with vacuum suction. There are a variety of liposuction techniques, including tumescent liposuction and laser liposuction. During tumescent liposuction, the treated area is infused with a solution that helps blood vessels constrict to help minimize bruising and post-operative discomfort while facilitating the removal of fat. Laser liposuction (such as Smartlipo) incorporates ultrasound to help break up fat before it is removed, and may have a skin-tightening effect that can be especially beneficial for patients with a minor loss of skin elasticity.
Dr. Salama says: “Despite the plethora of non-invasive fat-reduction technologies that have become available, liposuction is still the gold standard for effectively eliminating unwanted fat and contouring the body’s silhouette. The main reason this plastic surgery procedure remains so popular is because it can dramatically improve the appearance of so many areas of the body, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, lower back, buttocks and arms, as well as smaller, more targeted areas like around the bra line.”

Rhinoplasty

#3: Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
Number of procedures: 213,780
Percent change from 2017: Down 2%
The details: Rhinoplasty improves the size, shape, projection and overall appearance of the nose by reshaping and/or reducing nasal tissues as well as underlying bone structure. Depending on the extent of correction necessary and the desired rhinoplasty outcomes, incisions can be placed within the nostrils for a “closed” procedure or just beneath the nostrils in an “open” approach, however the scar is virtually undetectable once healed.
Dr. Salama says: “The nose is the central feature of the face, and rhinoplasty can have a profound impact on one’s overall facial appearance. The primary goal of rhinoplasty is to bring the nose into proportion with other facial features, and create a natural-looking balance. This plastic surgery procedure is often used to restore proper breathing as well, and it’s popularity is definitely due to the fact that it’s appropriate for patients of all ages.”

Blepharoplasty

#4: Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
Number of procedures: 206,529
Percent change from 2017: Down 1%
The details: Eyelid surgery can be performed to improve visible signs of aging in the eye area or refine specific attributes that are due to genetics and ethnicity in younger patients. Excess skin, wrinkles and under-eye bags can all be improved with blepharoplasty, and this procedure delivers significant improvement in a fatigued or tired appearance.
Dr. Salama says: “The eyes are a focal point of the face, and subtle, natural-looking improvements can have a significant impact both on the overall appearance and a patient’s self-confidence. There are many effective non-surgical ways to restore a youthful-looking the eye area, but blepharoplasty offers long-lasting results that help reset the clock in terms of aging, and this contributes to its ongoing popularity.”

Tummy tuck

#5: Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
Number of procedures: 103,081
Percent change from 2017: No change
The details: With various techniques to address mild to severe excess skin and muscle laxity, a tummy tuck restores a flat, toned stomach, especially after multiple pregnancies and significant weight loss.
Dr. Salama says: “Although a tummy tuck requires significant recovery, this is the ideal plastic surgery procedure for men and women who desire a more streamlined stomach. Often performed in conjunction with breast augmentation or a breast lift as part of a “Mommy Makeover,” a tummy tuck delivers dramatic improvement in the appearance of the mid-section that cannot be achieved with a healthy diet and regular exercise alone. This is among one of the procedures I perform most frequently simply because the results speak for themselves.”
