Is Your Makeup Expired? Here’s When To Toss Your Beauty Essentials

We all have that one mascara tube we cling to for months (or longer), and a lipstick shade we just can't part with. But keeping expired makeup in your beauty bag might be doing more harm than good. Makeup products, just like food, have a shelf life—ignoring it can lead to irritation, breakouts, and even infections. So, when is it time to say goodbye? Here’s your go-to guide for keeping your beauty routine fresh and your skin happy.

Mascara: Toss Every 3 Months

Mascara has one of the shortest lifespans in your beauty bag. After just three months, bacteria start to build up inside the tube, increasing your risk of eye infections. If your mascara becomes clumpy, dry, or has a strange smell, don’t hesitate—throw it out.

Eyeliner: Toss Every 3-6 Months (Liquid/Gel), 2 Years (Pencil)

Liquid and gel eyeliners have a similar risk to mascara and should be replaced every three to six months. Pencil liners, however, can last up to two years if sharpened regularly to remove bacteria. If your liner starts to tug at your skin or dries out, it’s time for a new one.

Foundation: Toss Every 6-12 Months (Liquid), 2 Years (Powder)

Liquid foundations last between six to 12 months before they start to separate, thicken, or smell off. If your foundation is in a jar, bacteria can transfer more easily, shortening its shelf life. Powder formulas, including pressed and loose powders, can last up to two years but should be tossed if they develop an unusual texture.

Concealer: Toss Every 6-12 Months (Liquid), 18 Months (Stick)

Liquid concealers should be replaced every six to 12 months, while stick formulas can last up to 18 months. If your concealer becomes cakey, dry, or starts to smell different, it’s time to let it go.

Lipstick & Lip Gloss: Toss Every 12-18 Months (Lipstick), 6-12 Months (Lip Gloss)

Lipsticks can last up to 18 months, but glosses should be replaced sooner—every six to 12 months. If you notice changes in texture, a sticky consistency, or an off smell, it’s time to say goodbye.

Blush, Bronzer & Eyeshadow: Toss Every 2 Years

Powder-based products like blush, bronzer, and eyeshadow tend to have a longer shelf life, lasting up to two years. However, if the texture changes, the pigment fades, or the product develops a hard film on top, it's time for a replacement.

Makeup Brushes: Wash Weekly, Replace as Needed

The lifespan of makeup brushes depends on their material. Synthetic brushes tend to last longer than natural hair brushes, as they absorb less product. However, all brushes should be deep cleaned at least once a week to prevent bacteria buildup. If bristles start to fray or shed, it’s time for a new set.

Beauty Blenders: Toss Every 3 Months

Beauty blenders absorb product and moisture, making them a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. They should be replaced every three months—or sooner if they start to tear or hold onto the product even after washing. Clean them after every use to keep them in good condition.

Makeup Bags: Clean Regularly

Makeup bags are often overlooked when it comes to cleanliness. Product residue, dirt, and bacteria accumulate over time, contaminating everything inside. Wipe down your bag with a disinfecting wipe regularly and turn it inside out for a deep clean.

Decluttering your makeup collection isn’t just about organization—it’s essential for healthy skin. A regular beauty bag refresh keeps your products working their best and ensures you’re not exposing your skin to harmful bacteria. If you’re unsure about a product’s expiration, trust your senses—if it smells off, looks different, or doesn’t perform the same, it’s time to replace it!
