In their quest for a miracle, they may turn to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) as their beacon of hope. While most couples hope for a single healthy baby, IVF can sometimes result in the joyous yet overwhelming news of expecting twins; even when only one embryo was transferred!
While the idea of having multiples may be exciting for some, it can also cause anxiety and fear for others. Today, Haute MD expert Dr. Brian A. Levine will discuss the risks associated with conceiving twins through IVF and what you can do to minimize these risks.
The Risks of Multiple Pregnancy
First and foremost, the risks to both the mother and the developing fetuses increase when carrying twins. Women carrying twins have a higher likelihood of experiencing complications such as premature labor, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, hypertension, or bleeding. Additionally, twin pregnancies tend to have lower birth weights than single pregnancies.
It’s also important to consider the costs associated with carrying twins. Pre-term births, neonatal ICU stays, and the long-term health complications that preemies face can all increase the costs of delivery and prenatal care.

Reducing the Risks of Multiple Pregnancy
The good news is that there are steps that can be taken to minimize these risks. Pregnancy is a time for a few lifestyle modifications, and carrying twins is no different. Following a healthy diet, avoiding smoking or drinking alcohol, and a prenatal care schedule should all be strictly observed.
Your doctor may suggest additional monitoring or testing during pregnancy to ensure that both babies are healthy and growing as they should be. Preconception counseling can also help to ensure that any underlying health conditions that could interfere with pregnancy progress are addressed before conception.
In addition, many fertility clinics will only transfer a single embryo during IVF, reducing the risk of twins or multiples. Although, embryos can split - yielding two pregnancies even when one embryo is transferred. Patients also have the option of selective reduction (in certain centers in certain states), which reduces the number of fetuses in the uterus from twins to a single fetus.
Coping with Multiple Pregnancy
It’s completely normal to feel anxious or overwhelmed when faced with the prospect of carrying twins but remember that you are not alone. Talking with a support group, counselor or other women who have gone through the same journey can be incredibly helpful.
Stay focused on reducing risk factors and maintaining a healthy, positive lifestyle during pregnancy. It’s important to address any concerns or questions you may have, so talk with your healthcare provider about strategies for staying healthy and safe. And if recommended, seek the care of a high-risk provider, also known as a maternal fetal medicine (MFM) specialist.
While carrying twins with IVF does come with additional risks, there are steps you can take to stay healthy and reduce these risks. By following a healthy lifestyle and working alongside your medical provider, you can ensure that both you and your developing babies are as healthy as possible. Remember, take care of yourself and your growing family, stay positive, and seek medical and emotional support when you need it!
