How Choosing The Right Injectables Can Give Your Face A More Refreshed Look

Dr. Asaad H. Samra, a native of New Jersey, obtained his medical degree in 2001 from the prominent UMDNJ – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Upon graduating, he went on to train in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine’s world-renowned integrated residency program located in the largest medical center in the world, The Texas Medical Center.

When it comes to giving your face a refreshed and well-rested appearance, dermal fillers are the go-to minimally invasive option. However, factors to take into consider when choosing the right injectable include your timeline, the desired effect, age and of course money.

Most recently a combination of 2 injectables, offered by Dr. Asaad Samra at Samra Plastic surgery, is yielding more long-lasting results and an even more youthful appearance without going under the knife when traditional dermal fillers are no longer an option.

“...You can consider the face like a pillow. And with time, that pillow can lose its fluff and your choices are to put more stuffing in the pillow or to tighten the seam. Now, stuffing the pillow is filler, and tightening the seam would be surgical lifting,” says Dr. Samra.

That’s where Renuva and Sculptra come in. “So typically, we would say a younger person needs a little less volume and an older person would need a little bit more volume…  In the younger patient population, when we’re adding volume to the face, they would need smaller amounts of volume and be able to focus on what their trouble spot is,” says Dr. Samra.

These HA fillers options Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero offer more of an immediate result. “For people who need more volume in their face, and therefore now they need it (filler) in their temples, in their cheek and in their nasolabial fold… Now you're looking at someone who needs more overall facial volumizing. That's when I start thinking about Sculptra,” adds Dr. Samra.

Sculptra was initially designed for people who had lost fat in the face as a result of having the HIV infection. There's something about that infection that affects the fat of the face. So, Sculptra was designed to try to restore the volume to the cheeks in the patient with HIV lipodystrophy.

Sculptra, which is medical suture material, is injected and in turn stimulates the production of the body’s own collagen. Treatment sessions are typically done every four to six weeks or done four to six weeks apart, according to Dr. Samra.

While Renuva, stimulates fat growth through harvested fat for more volume loss. Patients have to wait about 3 months before re-injecting in a given area, especially if volume sensitive areas like the face are being treated. Through precise technique and placement of the product Dr. Samra is able to give patients the desired effect.
