Dr. Zhuravsky’s philosophy revolves around his primary goal of patient satisfaction. Throughout his career, Dr. Zhuravsky has learned from some of the finest plastic surgeons and used his "spare time" to obtain further education in facial plastic surgery. Dr. Zhuravsky sat down with Haute Beauty to discuss exciting new surgical advancements and the future of his field.
My greatest achievement?
In regards to my career, my greatest achievement was breaking away from the comfort of working for an established practice and opening my own practice. This was a major undertaking and a big leap. I moved away from my established patient base and had to start from scratch. Despite the many difficulties of moving to a new area and opening a new practice, persevered and achieved exactly what I dreamed to accomplish.
The future of my field is?
My field of facial plastic surgery, the way I see it, can be divided into two categories; procedures to reverse the signs of aging, and procedures to alter one's appearance in order to improve overall aesthetics. The future of anti-aging therapies will be in the advancement of methods to prevent or significantly slow down the aging process altogether. Genetic and stem cell therapies have a long way to go, but will also likely be a major contributor. In regards to the second category of facial enhancements and alterations, the goal is to change the size and shape of particular regions. Thus, I believe the future will be in more advanced and longer lasting fillers, as well as biocompatible facial implants that are 3-D printed from the patient's own cells. Several technologies must come together for this, but I see it as a strong possibility.
The biggest misconception about my field is?
That plastic surgeons can make scars nonexistent. It is true that we are able to use certain techniques to make scars heal.
My most requested procedures are?
Injectables, including Botox and Fillers, are certainly the most common procedures requested. This is due to their more immediate results, quick treatments, no downtime, and relatively low side effects. Rhinoplasty is the most commonly requested procedure from the surgical realm. The nose is central to facial aesthetics and can have a major influence on overall facial balance.
What surgical advancements are you most excited about?
Most of the advancements in facial plastic surgery are actually focused on “non-surgical” modalities. Many different types of laser, radiofrequency, ultrasound, and even electromagnetic energy have been used for aesthetic purposes. I am excited to see how much more skin tightening, rejuvenation, and destruction of fat cells we can achieve with more advancements in the field.
In regards, to advancements specific to surgery, I am excited about improved means of surgical visualization. The most important thing in surgery is to do no harm. Advancements that allow the surgeon to visualize nerves and vessels can decrease complication rates and improve outcomes.
What are you best known for?
It seems I am best known for my attention to each patients unique needs, and for tailoring my treatment to those specific needs.
What is your most memorable patient reaction?
The reactions that I get from patients after surgery are typical of happiness and improved self-confidence. These reactions are the most rewarding part of my job. A very memorable reaction was from one of my earliest rhinoplasty patients, who had always avoided taking pictures and would always ask others to delete or to not post pictures that had been taken. After surgery, the patient was liberated, taking an overabundance of pictures, and freely telling others to post without even checking the pictures first. It was a dramatic change not only in self-confidence but also in a way of daily life.
What sets my practice apart is?
My practice is focused on providing a personalized and unique approach to each patient. Rather than just providing a variety of treatments, the focus is on the patient first, then we figure out how to achieve what they truly need.
What I love most about my profession is?
I love the ability to have a positive impact in someone’s life as well as the interactions I have with my patients.
Career defining procedure?
Rhinoplasty is one of the most intricate, variable, and difficult procedures in plastic surgery. Each and every rhinoplasty is truly unique. It requires a deep understanding of the nasal structure, function, and contribution to the overall aesthetic balance of the entire face. My specialized experiences and study of rhinoplasty makes this my career-defining procedure.
