Menopause is a natural phase, but for millions of Canadian women, it can bring overwhelming symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, and brain fog. Unfortunately, many women find themselves navigating this stage with minimal guidance from a healthcare system that often overlooks their needs. Modern Menopause, led by Dr. Eileen Wang, MD, is changing the way menopause care is delivered, offering personalized, science-backed treatment tailored to each patient.

A new standard for menopause and perimenopause care in Canada

At the heart of Modern Menopause is a mission to empower women with the knowledge and care they need. Dr. Eileen Wang, a board-certified physician with advanced menopause training under renowned expert Dr. Sylvie Demers, MD, PhD, founded the platform to address a critical gap in women’s health. “Throughout my career, I noticed significant gaps in care for women going through perimenopause and menopause. Most healthcare professionals receive minimal to no training in this and are not comfortable treating patients, no small part due to outdated myths,” Dr. Wang explains. This realization inspired her to launch Modern Menopause, offering compassionate, personalized care to women across Canada.

Modern Menopause’s innovative telemedicine-first model combined with an in-person practice makes it easier than ever for women across Canada to access specialized menopause care. Patients receive comprehensive and unrushed assessments with its team of physicians and nurse practitioners, allowing time for counseling, education, and customized treatment planning.

Debunking myths and restoring confidence in hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the first-line treatment for managing the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause, supported by decades of evolving medical research. However, there remain significant outdated fears surrounding HRT, which stemmed mainly from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study conducted in the late 1990s, which incorrectly linked HRT to an increased risk of breast cancer and stroke. Subsequent research has corrected these misconceptions, demonstrating that HRT, when used appropriately, does not increase these risks—and, in many cases, may reduce them.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association tracked 26,000 women over 18 years and provided critical insights into the long-term impact of HRT. The randomized trial found that women who chose HRT experienced lower rates of cardiovascular and cancer-related deaths, as well as reduced all-cause mortality, compared to those on a placebo.

“HRT offers more than just symptom relief,” Dr. Wang emphasizes. “When appropriate, it can reduce the risks of osteoporosis, heart disease, and cognitive decline. We want to help women feel confident in their choices and empowered by the care they receive.”

This growing body of evidence underscores the importance of reassessing HRT through a modern, research-based lens, highlighting that the therapy offers significant benefits when personalized to meet individual health needs.

Taking a holistic approach to menopause care

Modern Menopause provides a comprehensive range of hormone replacement therapy treatments to Canadian women, including estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, ensuring that every patient receives a personalized plan suited to her health needs alongside non-hormonal therapies.

But beyond just menopause or perimenopause, the platform takes a holistic approach to women’s health, offering services such as weight management, sexual health support, and preventive screenings for cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

“Many of our patients come to us after being dismissed elsewhere,” Dr. Wang explains. “Here, they finally feel understood.” This comprehensive approach ensures that women receive tailored care for both their immediate symptoms and long-term health. The goal is to help women enhance their quality of life throughout midlife by addressing the full spectrum of physical and emotional needs during this life stage.
