The blissful weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day seem to fly by, especially soaking in the warm sunshine and vacationing with those you love. However, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays — not “aging” or gravity — cause about 80% of all the signs of skin aging, including:
- Loose, sagging skin
- Dry, thin skin
- Dark spots and sun spots
- Visible facial veins
- Wrinkles
- Creases
So, while the vibe of summer is sweet, it does have major negative impacts on your skin. Here Haute Beauty expert Dr. Alina Sholar provides the tools you need to cleanse and repair your skin, just in time for the leaves to fall.
Renovate Your Skincare Routine
When summer comes to an end, it’s time to reevaluate your skin’s needs and, thus, your fall and winter skincare routine. Your skin's needs will change seasonally and changing up your routine can aid in eliminating some of the visible effects of sun damage and protect your skin from moisture loss during colder months. It could be time to invest in skin-brightening serums and barrier repair creams. Your plastic surgeon, skin expert, or dermatologist can help you choose what products are best for your individual skin. Our favorites like the AnteAgeMD Brightener and Dermaviduals High Classic DMS Cream.
Antioxidants Get Damage Out
Antioxidants help reduce free radical reactions in your skin from UV injury, which contribute to premature aging and skin damage. Clinical studies demonstrate that a twice-daily application of an entourage of tetrahexyldecylascorbate, a potent esterified form of vitamin C, along with vitamin E, coQ10, and isoflavones work together as a team to not only prevent the damage but to aid in the repair process as well. Adding “quenches” of in-office facials using these antioxidant formulations during electroporation drives them down into the dermis to effectively squelch any lingering free radicals.

Laser Erasers
Laser treatments are the best and most efficient way to reduce the signs of summer skin damage. Depending on your skin type and tone, the severity of your sun-damaged skin, other skin conditions, and your lifestyle, there are plenty of laser treatments for you to choose from. Laser skin resurfacing with a fractional CO2 laser has proven effective at reducing signs of aging and other forms of skin damage, such as fine lines, wrinkles, superficial freckles, and hyperpigmentation within corneocytes by ablating the surface skin cells. Lasers to treat the melanin pigment itself are also very effective, including the Discovery PICO Laser, which breaks up even the deepest melanin pigment to even out skin color. Plasma devices like the Subnovii can remove seborrheic keratoses and damage from summers past. Finally, you’ll most definitely need to add some collagen back into your skin. The sun’s UV rays make your collagen brittle and ineffective, so stimulating new, fresh collagen and elastin is paramount to reviving your skin. The VirtueRF Microneedling is a perfect choice alone or in combination with any of these lasers above to restore youth and brightness to summer-dulled skin.
Sunscreen Not Just For Summer Days
Last, but certainly not least, protect your investment and remember to apply sunscreen as part of your daily skincare regimen. UV rays, the stealthy, non-burning kind that causes skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles, occur year-round. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that everyone wear sunscreen daily. Invest in a well-formulated mineral SPF, which provides SPF 30 and above with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection that feels good to wear. Our favorites are ISDIN’s Eryfotona Ageless and GlowbioticsMD’s Tinted SPF. And, for you that are in front of a computer screen all day for work, you are exposed to blue light that is skin damaging too. So, sunscreen is a must-have 365 days per year!
