HB: What are dental implants?

Dental Implant- Dental implants can improve a patients' overall health, while helping them gain the confidence that comes from a well-functioning smile that looks good and feels natural. This treatment is a great alternative to replacing a missing tooth.

HB: How does the procedure work?

Dental implant restorations have three parts: Titanium, bone-integrated implant, Implant abutment & Implant porcelain crown.

After the initial step where the implant is placed a temporary restoration is placed over a 4-6 month period while the site heals. After which the abutment and Implant porcelain crown is placed.

HB: Who is the best candidate for dental implants?

In order to be a good candidate for dental implants, patients should have healthy teeth and gums, as periodontal disease can lower the success rate of implants. Additionally, a patient should be committed to maintaining good oral health if a patient has underlying medical issues such as autoimmune disorder or uncontrolled diabetes such conditions can interfere with the patients' ability to heal following the procedure. A key component of the success of placing an implant is osseointegration (where the bone accepts the implant) this can be inhibited if the patient is a smoker.

HB: How does this treatment compare to others of the same nature?

Dental implants don't require reducing other teeth, such as a tooth-supported bridge does. Surrounding teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene.

HB: What does recovery look like?

Once the implant has been restored with the abutment and implant crown the patient can resume all normal activity. With proper care and routine dental hygiene visits implants can last a lifetime.
