Haute 100 New York Update: Derek Jeter

On our Haute 100 New York list is Derek Jeter, one of the highest paid baseball players whose endorsement deals, philanthropic efforts and unsurpassed athletic prowess proves he is a force to be reckoned with.

What Made Him Haute: The Yankees drafted Derek Jeter the sixth overall pick in the June 1992 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He was the first high school player chosen that year and became the third shortstop selected in Yankees history with a first-round pick. Derek made his ninth All-Star Team in 2008, and just before our press run, he hit a two-run homer in game one of the American League division series, which the Yankees won.

What Makes Him Haute Now: The baseball superstar is being praised for what looks to be like a fairly auspicious postseason beginning. According to hitting coach Kevin Long, Jeter took his turn at bat and swung to “hit [the ball] about as good as you can hit a baseball.” Though he started a bit slow, striking out during his first turn at bat, he seems to be picking up speed, reportedly hitting the ball hard and confidently.

Joe Girard agrees with this prediction, stating he sees signs of Jeter’s improvement: “when he was struggling, he is hitting a lot of ground balls, and we’ve seen him hit a lot of line drives and elevate balls to right and center field, and that’s when Derek is going well.”

Although Jeter hasn’t been getting a lot of good press in the past few weeks, it looks like it might be a promising season for him after all.
