What Made Him Haute: Credited with revolutionizing the entertainment and hospitality industries, Schrager burst onto the scene in the ’70s with his club Studio 54. He has since redefined the boutique hotel genre, and his residential projects, such as 40 Bond and 50 Gramercy Park North, make national headlines. Schrager reportedly inked a deal in May 2009 with Murray Hill Properties LLC, a New York City real estate investment firm, to develop a six-star, ultra luxury hotel at 1414 Avenue of the Americas.
What Makes Him Haute Now: As a hotelier, Schrager recently developed the Marriott’s new lifestyle brand, Edition, one of the Marriott’s luxury brands; others include the Ritz-Carlton and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, which will open in December. The Cosmopolitan stands to be the brand’s largest property and first casino resort. Schrager will partner up with Marriott a second time to build an Edition hotel in Waikiki Beach in October and expand the boutique concept. The hotelier and Marriott have even made the deal sweeter; Marriott has put together a “Debut Offer” of $195 a night for an ocean view guest room. Suites start at $550, and the trip must be booked by September 30th.
Schrager also has plans to work on Miami’s Seville Beach Hotel, which was recently bought for $57.5 million; the hotelier will renovate the space and it will reopen under the Edition brand.
