Let Them Eat Cake (and Drink Cocktails): The Luxury Hotel Menus Inspired by Marie Antoinette, Frida Kahlo and More Historical Figures
From Marie Antoinette teas in Paris and London to Frida Kahlo cocktails in Bangkok, these menus are inspired by history's icons.
Marie Antoinette never got to take afternoon tea with Manolo Blahnik. You can. At Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, the shoe legend and pastry chef Matthieu Carlin have created a Marie Antoinette tea served with Rare Champagne, and it’s just one of a dozen luxury hotel and bar menus putting history’s most fascinating figures on the table, from a Mozart tea in Austria and a Jane Austen tea in Bath to a Frida Kahlo cocktail in Bangkok, Somerset Maugham’s Million Dollar Cocktail at Raffles Singapore, Agatha Christie at Rosewood London’s Scarfes Bar and an entire lounge of presidential drinks at California’s Mission Inn.
Some dinner guests are worth inviting even knowing they’ll be exhausting. Marie Antoinette, for one: impeccable taste, presumably spectacular shoes and absolutely no intention of keeping things low-key.
The best of these menus go deeper than a famous name. They draw on the tastes, work and real-life connections that made these personalities unforgettable, often to the very room you’re sitting in. Here’s where to order a little history, with far better refreshments than you remember from school.

Marie Antoinette Afternoon Tea
Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel, Paris
Of course Marie Antoinette’s tea has a fashion collaborator. At Hôtel de Crillon, pastry chef Matthieu Carlin has teamed up with Manolo Blahnik for the return of a service inspired by the queen’s famously refined tastes, and frankly, anything less would have been a disappointment.
Served in the Jardin d’Hiver, it pairs Carlin’s pastries with Rare Champagne and hot chocolate, all presented on Faïence Gien’s Marie-Antoinette collection. Carlin brings the pastry mastery, Blahnik brings the eye for beauty and the Crillon, steps from the Place de la Concorde, brings a setting grand enough to handle all that extravagance. Dress for it.
Haute Living Verdict: The most fashionable afternoon tea in Paris. Wear the good shoes.
Marie Antoinette Afternoon Tea
Town House at The Kensington, London
Marie Antoinette is holding court in London, too. Town House at The Kensington channels the style and spectacle of Versailles through pastel-hued pastries and an afternoon tea with a joyfully indulgent streak.
Add the optional Queen’s Coupe cocktail, or a glass of Charles Heidsieck Champagne (both are entirely defensible choices). It’s a British ritual in a French royal wardrobe, and a far better plan than “let’s grab a coffee.”
Haute Living Verdict: Versailles in South Kensington. Pretty, playful and perfectly decadent.
Royal Afternoon Teas
Baccarat Hotel New York
Baccarat has real royal history to draw on, and its New York hotel makes delicious use of it. The King Louis XV Caviar Tea honors the monarch who authorized the founding of the glassworks in Baccarat, France, in 1764, served with Royal Ossetra or Beluga “X” caviar. Some history lessons simply require better equipment.
The Princess of Monaco Tea toasts another chapter: Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly’s 1956 wedding, for which two personalized Baccarat crystal perfume bottles were commissioned. Here, sweets and warm housemade scones set a gentler, more romantic tone.
Haute Living Verdict: Crystal, caviar and a royal wedding. Midtown has never felt so regal.
Mozart Afternoon Tea
Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, near Salzburg, Austria
Mozart’s latest performance comes with Champagne. In Rosewood Schloss Fuschl’s Sisi Teesalon, the Mozart Afternoon Tea is structured like a concert program, moving from a Savory Opening to a Sweet Introduction and on to Sweet Symphonies.
Sheep’s-cheese profiteroles, truffled oxtail croquettes and foie gras macarons with plum chutney and turmeric open the show; a Mozart tartlet, pistachio financier, punch cube, Bundt cake and pralines follow. In a lakeside castle a short drive from the composer’s birthplace, it all feels wonderfully fitting.
Haute Living Verdict: A tea in three movements. Applaud with your Champagne glass.
Regency Afternoon Tea
The Roseate Villa, Bath
Jane Austen knew the entertainment value of good conversation, and of bad conversation, which is often better. The Roseate Villa’s Regency Afternoon Tea, introduced on September 1, 2026, pays tribute to the Jane Austen Festival and the world the author knew, with finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, pastries and fine teas, plus optional Prosecco.
In the city where Austen lived and set two of her novels, the sense of place does half the work. Bring someone who can hold a conversation, and perhaps quietly assess everyone’s romantic prospects.
Haute Living Verdict: Pride, prejudice and clotted cream. A truth universally acknowledged.
Cocktail Bars

Doyle Bar
The Dupont Circle Hotel, Washington, D.C.
Washington’s history has always unfolded in rooms where people talk. Doyle Bar’s Swing Set, a twelve-drink collection introduced in May 2026, celebrates personalities tied to the city. Beautiful Bird honors Lady Bird Johnson and her beautification work with floral tequila, herbal liqueur, yuzu, jalapeño and lime.
Rachel Carson inspires Silent Spring, a nonalcoholic blend of botanical spirits, strawberry-basil oleo saccharum, citrus and elderflower tonic, while go-go legend Chuck Brown gets GoGo Swing: bourbon, prosecco, crème de cacao, a cayenne-spiced Lillet Rouge reduction and lemon. Politics, conservation and music, all at one bar.
Haute Living Verdict: A portrait of Washington with a far more interesting cast than usual.
BKK Social Club
Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River
A Bangkok bar might seem an unexpected place to meet Frida Kahlo, but BKK Social Club makes a gorgeous introduction. Its Mexico-inspired menu explores the country through its places, personalities and celebrations. The Frida Kahlo is a sour of Kentucky bourbon, lavender maple, maraschino, coconut, citrus, anisette and egg white, layered and complex, much like her work.
Tequila pioneer Don Julio González gets his own tribute in Since 1942, Don Julio O.F., made with Don Julio 1942 Extra Añejo, apricot and bitters. An artist and a spirits legend: two very different ways into the same country, and an excellent excuse for a second round.
Haute Living Verdict: Mexico by way of the Chao Phraya. Start with Frida.
Writers Bar
Raffles Singapore
Some hotels have a guestbook; Raffles Singapore has enough literary history to fill a library. At Writers Bar, the cocktail program draws on authors including Somerset Maugham, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and J.R.R. Tolkien, reimagining classic drinks, while the hotel’s Writer’s Residency keeps the tradition alive.
Order the Million Dollar Cocktail, created by legendary Raffles bartender Ngiam Tong Boon and immortalized in Maugham’s short story The Letter: gin, pineapple, vermouth, lemon, egg white, grenadine and aromatic bitters. Gleaming brass, chandelier light and shelves of books and mementos complete the scene.
Haute Living Verdict: A cocktail with its own literary credits. Bring a novel, or don’t.

Scarfes Bar
Rosewood London, 252 High Holborn
Scarfes Bar knows the most interesting personalities rarely have uncomplicated reputations. Its Heroes & Villains menu explores the contrasting sides of famous figures through paired cocktails and Gerald Scarfe’s caricatures, mixing historical names with contemporary ones.
Agatha Christie inspires 4.50 from Paddington, a gin and tonic with Fords Gin, chinotto honey, Acqua di Cedro and tonic. Margaret Thatcher gets two: Iron Lady (whisky, chocolate wine, fig leaf and clarified citrus) and Divided Kingdom, a White Russian riff with vodka, mango cream, acorn and coffee. Choosing your drink turns out to be surprisingly revealing.
Haute Living Verdict: Wit in every glass. Your taste in villains may surprise you.
Aqua Shard
The Shard, 31st floor, London
At Aqua Shard, British history comes with a spectacular view. The British Icons collection celebrates the personalities who shaped the country’s culture while London stretches out 31 floors below.
Churchill’s Vice blends rum, Barolo Chinato, patchouli and fig liqueur; Fleming’s Remedy and The Earl’s Negroni continue the roll call. Settle in, order slowly and give the skyline the attention it deserves.
Haute Living Verdict: Britain’s greatest hits, served with London at your feet.
Opaline Bar & Brasserie
Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square
At Opaline, the First Ladies have the floor. The 2026 cocktail collection ties into the hotel’s partnership with artist Maggie O’Neill and the eleven First Ladies portrayed throughout the property, with each drink drawn from a notable association or favorite thing.
The portraits introduce the women; the cocktails give you a reason to learn more. Steps from the White House, an evening devoted to the First Ladies feels wonderfully overdue.
Haute Living Verdict: History’s leading ladies, finally center stage.
The Presidential Lounge
The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, Riverside, California
The Mission Inn has a rare advantage: its own guest list. The Presidential Lounge pours W.H. Taft’s Soixante Quinze, Herbert Hoover’s Honey Buzz, Reagan’s Orange Blossom Martini, J.F.K.’s Daiquiri and a Teddy Roosevelt Espresso Martini. The Reagans honeymooned here in 1952, and Nixon’s Scotch & Ginger honors his 1940 wedding at the hotel.
Hollywood gets its turn too: Bette Davis’s Beautiful Lady combines Cognac and Grand Marnier, and Amelia Earhart’s Perfect Sunrise blends mezcal, tequila, pineapple, mango and cherry. With presidential portraits on the walls, the stories start before the drinks arrive.
Haute Living Verdict: Start with a toast to Bette Davis. She’d never settle for a supporting role.
