Palm Beach Season is Officially Starting, and the Island Is About to Triple in Size

In Palm Beach, “season” is not a figure of speech. It is a specific, socially codified period that runs from October through April and governs the rhythm of nearly everything on the island. Restaurants, galas, cultural institutions, private clubs, and the social calendar that defines winter all operate on this timeline. If you are new to the island, this is where the orientation begins.

In practice, the season opens with the first charity events of October. The Habitat for Humanity Dream Builders’ Ball on October 9, 2026, is the first major ballroom evening on the announced 2026 to 2027 calendar, and the island’s social machinery begins warming up around it. By November, private club dining rooms have resumed their full schedules, families have returned from summers in the Hamptons, Europe, or Newport, and the Palm Beach Food and Wine Festival in December marks the moment the season fully arrives.

The season ends, roughly, when the polo ends. The National Polo Center in Wellington runs its schedule from late December through early May, and when the last major match is played, the island exhales. By the time the heat of a South Florida June settles in, the people who make Palm Beach what it is between October and April have largely gone somewhere else for the summer, and the island enters a quieter, more local register until October arrives again.

The simplest way to understand the season is that it is when Palm Beach becomes itself fully. The population of the island triples. The cultural institutions that operate year-round present their most ambitious programming. The restaurants that are technically open in July are actually full. And the gala calendar, the island’s social infrastructure in a way with no real equivalent anywhere else in the country, runs without interruption from October through April.

More than sixty galas fill The Breakers, Mar-a-Lago, and the private clubs throughout the season. These are not ordinary charity events. They are the occasions that serious Palm Beach residents plan their winters around, the evenings that require committee involvement months in advance and invitation management throughout. The Heart Ball, the Red Cross Ball, the Norton Museum Gala, the Preservation Foundation Annual Dinner Dance, the Peggy Adams Christmas Ball, and the amfAR Gala Palm Beach, which has raised nearly $20 million for HIV/AIDS research and drawn honorees including Tommy Hilfiger, are among the events that carry the most social weight.

The cultural calendar is equally serious, with the Four Arts, the Norton Museum, and the Kravis Center all presenting their most significant programming during the months when the audience is actually here to experience it. Apple TV’s Palm Royale, which made Palm Beach high society a subject of national fascination, got the competitive architecture roughly right, even if it moved the timeline back to 1969 and added a great deal of sequins.

Season is fundamentally philanthropic, and that distinction matters more than it might initially seem. The gala circuit is not merely social. It is the mechanism through which Palm Beach’s community directs significant resources toward the arts, medicine, conservation, and community organizations. Showing up for season means showing up for the causes the island has decided it cares about, and engaging seriously with that commitment is how newcomers become part of the community rather than observers.

Underneath it all, the private clubs are the connective tissue that holds the season together in a way no public institution can replicate. The Beach Club, the Everglades Club, the Breakers Ocean Club, and the other invitation-only institutions on the island are where the relationships that make the season work are actually built and maintained. Membership processes are long and relationship-dependent. Beginning that process sooner rather than later is one of the most practical things a newcomer can do.

Season is also not the same thing as being in Palm Beach. People who spend the winter months on the island but do not engage with the gala calendar, the cultural institutions, the polo, or the club life are spending their winter in a beautiful place. They are not really doing season. The distinction matters to the people for whom season matters, which is to say, most of the people whose company makes the island worth being on in the first place.

The Breakers

The Breakers is the gravitational center of the Palm Beach social calendar, and has been since Henry Flagler opened the original property in 1896. More major charity events take place in its ballrooms than anywhere else on the island, and its dining rooms and beach club provide the daily infrastructure of social life through the season. For newcomers, The Breakers is often the first institution that makes the full scope of Palm Beach season legible.

The Society of the Four Arts has been the island’s premier cultural institution since its founding in 1936, presenting lectures, exhibitions, concerts, films, and educational programming on its ten-acre campus along the Intracoastal Waterway. The campus includes a 700-seat concert hall auditorium, an art gallery, a modern education center, two libraries, and sculpture gardens. One of those libraries serves as the town’s public library for Palm Beach, a detail that speaks to the institution’s relationship with the community it has served for nearly ninety years.

The National Polo Center in Wellington

The National Polo Center in Wellington hosts world-class polo competition from late December through early May, drawing international teams and audiences that treat the Wellington grounds as a natural extension of the island’s social calendar. The U.S. Open Polo Championship, the C.V. Whitney Cup, and the USPA Gold Cup anchor the polo season, and Sunday afternoon matches are one of the defining social experiences of a serious Palm Beach winter. The grounds themselves have become a destination beyond the sport. Farm Stand, a curated open-air marketplace that runs Wednesday through Sunday throughout the winter season at Wellington International, brings together nearly 50 rotating brands, local food vendors, and a considered retail experience that has become a draw in its own right for the polo crowd and the Palm Beach community alike.
