The Pursuit of Perfection: George Russell x AMAFFI
PRECISION, POWER, AND PERFUME
GEORGE RUSSELL, BEYOND THE TRACK.
BY LAUREN MOSSERI
George Russell operates at a level where every fraction of a second counts. The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One driver has built his career on a simple conviction: that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s the path to it. Off the track, that same clarity shapes everything from the way he travels to the fragrances he reaches for before a significant moment. In fact, his latest partnership with AMAFFI, the fine perfume house that operates—as Russell puts it—at the absolute highest level, feels less like a brand deal and more like a natural extension of how he moves through the world—with intention, with purpose, and with nothing left to chance.

HAUTE LIVING: If you weren’t driving, what profession do you see yourself in?
GEORGE RUSSELL: This is a no-brainer: I’d be a farmer. I just love spending time in nature, looking after and playing with animals, and tending to the land. My family used to work in agriculture too, so I’ve always been surrounded by that nature of work and could see myself having my own farm one day.
HL: What’s one thing most people would be surprised to learn about you?
GR: I love to eat kiwis with the skin on—don’t knock it until you try it!
HL: Looking back, if you could give ‘young George’ any advice, what would it be?
GR: It would be “Don’t Be Afraid To Fail.” I think failure gets such a bad rep, and actually, it’s through failure that we learn, we grow, and we become stronger. So, I’d say keep pushing, keep going for it, and don’t be discouraged by any failures along the way.
HL: Regarding your personal style off the track, what role does scent play in how you present yourself or prepare for significant moments?
GR: First impressions are extremely important, and scent plays a vital part in that. Often, people remember what you wore when they met you, and that can help define your look and identity for them, so it’s definitely worth considering carefully. I love pairing scents with specific events too; for example, I save Glory by AMAFFI for very special occasions as I link the scent to celebrations.

HL: Speaking of scents, do you find that certain fragrances are associated with specific moments?
GR: For sure; I enjoy wearing the AMAFFI Tropical Rain when I’m off the clock, usually in the evenings when I’m spending time with my loved ones. It’s an impactful scent. Similarly, if I’ve got an important business meeting, I’ll accompany this moment with a specific fragrance. I do think there’s a scent for each moment in life; it’s the perfect accessory.
HL: There are clear parallels between the precision of engineering in your sport and the craftsmanship of fine perfumery. Both disciplines rely on meticulous detail to create a performance that is both sensory and emotional. In this context, how do you define modern craftsmanship?
GR: Craft and precision are at the core of everything in my life. I’m fortunate to work with people who are the absolute best in their fields and who take their craft incredibly seriously. AMAFFI is the total embodiment of craft; you see this in their products, which are one-of-a-kind and crafted with such deep care for detail and artistry. When you get the best results from years of perfecting a craft in any field, this result is ultimately very profound and impactful.
HL: To highlight the brand integration elegantly, what originally drew you to partner with AMAFFI?
GR: The first AMAFFI fragrance I tried was Royal Love Story, and it certainly stayed with me. I’m a strong believer that a product should speak for itself, and it was clear they don’t do things by half measures. I later met Didier-Alexandre Ambroise, the Managing Director of AMAFFI, and the rest of the AMAFFI team, and it immediately felt like we had synergy across so many areas. It’s been quite an organic process from the start.

HL: How does the house resonate with your personal values and pursuit of excellence?
GR: They operate at the absolute highest level in fragrance, and they are unmatched in this regard. For AMAFFI, it’s the best or nothing. This is exactly the same mindset that I’ve always had across all aspects of my life, so I feel we are truly aligned in this regard, which is super important.
HL: How would you describe AMAFFI in three words, and what does luxury mean to you personally?
GR: Elegant, luxurious, and artistry. The whole brand is about delivering a sophisticated experience that you’ll remember for a lifetime, one that’s iconic and indelible.
HL: What does “winning” mean to you beyond the podium?
GR: It means growth, moving forward, stepping beyond. To me, winning not only symbolizes a milestone but means becoming stronger—becoming better every single day.

HL: Finally, since this is our June issue, looking ahead to summer, what are some of your travel plans? Any favorite summer getaway spots?
GR: I plan on doing lots of training during the summer, so I’ll be spending most of my time in the gym with my trainer, going on hikes or runs at home, and recharging with family. I also love spending time by the sea and in the ocean, so I’ll be doing some of that. Some places I love are Sardinia, and Lanzarote is beautiful, too.
