This Atlanta Photographer Just Made Studio Gear Something Worth Collecting

For more than 25 years, Heidi Harris showed up to every shoot the same way the industry taught her to: dressed in black, equipment in black, engineered to disappear. Then one day, she stopped asking why — and started asking why not. This spring, the Atlanta photographer and fine artist launches Surrounded By Light, a design-forward line of limited-edition light stands that does something photography gear has never really done before: makes you want to look at it.
Harris came up the traditional way, blending into the background the way photographers are taught to do. She spent decades documenting small business owners, makers and entrepreneurs, drawn to people who build things from scratch. Her fine art background in drawing and sculpture gave her a sharp eye for form, texture and the emotional weight of color. And yet, every piece of gear she owned was black. “After 25 years of buying only black equipment, I started to crave an injection of color,” she says. “If my light stands aren’t in the photos, why can’t they be fun to look at?”
The debut drop arrives in three custom colorways — Day Glow Green, Chroma Blue and Warm Red — priced at $111 per stand, available in limited quantities beginning April 2026. Heavy-duty and premium-engineered, they’re built to perform. But the point isn’t just function. It’s feeling. The blue and green stands even pull double duty, blending seamlessly with their matching chroma backgrounds.

What’s ahead is bigger than the first drop. The roadmap includes brand collaborations, artist partnerships, and custom colorways for schools, universities, and creative programs — a platform that invites photographers and institutions to bring their own identity into the studio. For Harris, who spent years building a family and career before feeling ready to create something entirely her own, the launch is personal in every sense. “I wanted to add joy to the practical side of the job,” she says. “And create a brand that reflects the heart of the craft.”
The industry has been waiting — it just didn’t know it yet.
