Rome has always been a city of contrasts — sacred and sensual, ancient and electric. And no place captures that duality more elegantly than Hotel Eden. Perched just above the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese, this 98-room jewel box from the Dorchester Collection feels at once like a Roman palazzo and a modern-day refuge, where centuries of history and a dash of irreverence live comfortably side by side.

Opened in 1889 and reimagined in 2017 by a dream team of French designers — Bruno Moinard, Claire Bétaille, Patrick Jouin, and Sanjit Manku — Hotel Eden retains the soul of the city’s golden age while looking unapologetically ahead. From the rooftop’s sweeping views across tiled domes and bell towers to the contemporary clean lines and plush textures inside, the hotel walks the line between cinematic nostalgia and modern indulgence. It doesn’t just invite you to stay in Rome. It invites you to see it differently.

Chef Salvatore Bianco, who joined the hotel’s culinary team this year, is quietly rewriting the codes of Roman dining. At Il Giardino Ristorante, he spins Italian classics with a gentle irreverence.

Upstairs, you’ll find La Terrazza, where Bianco dives into conceptual territory with multi-course tasting menus served against one of the city’s most intoxicating views. Watching the sun set behind St. Peter’s while sipping a biodynamic Etna Rosso and indulging in a dish inspired by donkey milk? This isn’t your nonna’s cucina — and that’s the point. It’s the kind of food that tells a story: of Rome’s seasons, of forgotten ingredients, of Bianco’s passion for cooking with both intellect and intuition.

Even the tableware tells a story. In collaboration with celebrated Roman designer Coralla Maiuri, Hotel Eden has launched Eden Home, a bespoke porcelain collection that are available for retail. The pieces — whimsical, gilded, and handcrafted — reflect Rome’s own dual nature: rustic yet baroque, refined yet joyfully chaotic. Available for purchase in-house, they’re the kind of souvenirs you don’t tuck into a suitcase, but build your kitchen around.

The hotel itself is a microcosm of Roman life at its most stylish. La Libreria, a quietly elegant sitting room and cocktail hideaway, doubles as a gallery space with lamps and illustrations by artist Andrea Ferolla. It’s where you go for a negroni and a moment of solitude — or to stumble into an impromptu salon of designers, editors, and artists who treat Hotel Eden like their second living room.

Downstairs, the Eden Spa offers treatments by Valmont and HobePergh in a warm, vaulted sanctuary designed for post-flight recovery or pre-dinner ritual. There’s also in-room hairstyling service from Bartorelli.

But what truly sets Hotel Eden apart is its ability to offer guests more than luxury — it offers access. Through a curated itinerary called Hidden Rome: Artists and Secret Places, art historian Corinna Turati guides guests into a side of the city most never see. Picture a candlelit evening with Raphael’s frescoes at Villa Farnesina. A private collection hidden in the ruins of the ancient Roman senate. A secret terrace overlooking Trajan’s Markets.

One moment you’re sipping espresso in a frescoed 16th-century oratory known as the “miniature Sistine Chapel.” The next, you’re chatting with a Trastevere artist who dyes silk using wildflowers and paints inspired by Roman myths. And if that’s not enough adventure? The hotel’s newest experience sets sail for the Pontine Islands, with Chef Bianco joining the journey to cook lunch on board as you explore sea caves, lounge on remote beaches, and taste salt on your lips between bites of something bright and briny.

Under The Dorchester Collection umbrella, Hotel Eden’s quiet magnetism lies in its ability to create a sense of home — if your home happened to come with panoramic views, a noteworthy chef, and a concierge who can unlock doors you didn’t know existed.

This is not your average 5-star stay. It’s one where you wake to golden light spilling through tall windows, drink in rooftops from the sixth-floor terrace, and end your day wrapped in the same sheets that have welcomed film stars, philosophers, and royalty for more than a century. It has the most comfortable beds by far of any hotel I’ve ever stayed at, and a quiet sense of place — a quiet sense of peace. You’re a stone’s throw from the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain, but far enough removed that you never feel you’re stuck amongst the fray.

At Hotel Eden, la dolce vita is not a throwback. It’s a living, breathing, art-filled state of mind. And here, you’re invited to write your own chapter.
