Kim Jones Debuts Dior Men Pre-Fall 2019 Collection With Other-Worldly Show In Tokyo Metropolis
For his sophomore collection show for Dior Men, Artistic Director Kim Jones debuted the Pre-Fall 2019 collection at the Metropolis of Tokyo for an other-worldly experience. Tokyo served as the perfect backdrop for the awe-inspiring show, given its mirroring of the brand’s dedication to tradition and its simultaneous focus on modernity. Several notable attendees were seen at the show, including A$AP Rocky, Bella Hadid, Kate Moss, Diplo and David Beckham.

The looks were futuristic, whilst remaining quintessentially Dior. Keeping the brand’s heritage in mind, Jones used houndstooth tweed, the color pink and the panthère print, but in unexpected ways to embrace Tokyo’s (and the collection’s) hyper-modernity. For instance, panthère is water-colored; houndstooth tweed has an age-worn and distressed aesthetic made possible by a special weaving technique; and the Dior signature rose hue is reminiscent of the Japanese Cherry Blossom’s sakura-pink color. Other textures/materials showcased included silks, rubbers, denims, furs, laces, leathers and special, technologically-made metallics on leathers and furs, creating iridescent shades, each more eye-catching than the next.
The jaw-dropping 12-meter high sculpture in the middle of the runway, highlighted with multi-colored lasers that shone at various times during the show, was created by visionary sculptor Hajime Sorayama, who also inspired many of the pieces within the collection. The monolith figure represents the ideal female figure, celebrating her and Monsieur Dior’s idealization of her as divine by nature. Continuing Sorayama’s robotic style was Yoon Ahn, who designed many of the jewelry pieces that were showcased, touting nuts and bolts. Additionally, a limited-edition and reinterpreted Dior Men Saddle Bag made its debut on the catwalk, entirely in polished metal.
