The final project has been in the works for five years and involved heavy restoration of the historic location—which needed much fine-tuning to live up to the five-star hotel brand’s prestigious reputation. The introduction of the Setai Tel Aviv also marks the city’s first member of the luxurious Leading Hotels of the World—signifying a much-anticipated modernization of the popular city. The Setai Tel Aviv, however, is the second hotel from the brand located in Israel, following the success of the opening of Setai Sea of Galilee in Northern Israel in 2017.

The complex incorporates five buildings, which has been referred to locally as the “Kishle” or “jailhouse” in Turkish. However, it is among one of the most important properties in all of Israel from a historical, cultural and architectural perspective as it was originally part of a complex that was conquered and then inhabited by the most dominant empires in history, from the Crusader period to the Turkish-Ottoman Empire and then the British rule over Jaffa. The original property boasted buildings with stone wrap-around corridors, as well as a beautiful inner courtyard, which the present property now features in a newly-manicured version. The restoration uncovered many artifacts dating back to the 12th-Century, which contribute to the hotel’s cultural offerings as guests are able to check them out on display throughout the hotel.

Turkish-inspired interiors were curated by ARA Design, resulting in plush suites with rich walnut wooden furnishings accented against clean white linens and Middle Eastern-style light fixtures and colorful fabrics. The modern interiors juxtapose beautifully with the historical architecture of each room, which differs throughout the hotel space, maintaining the property’s original architectural structure.
