Licketey Split: Find Frozen Treats in NYC With the Help of the Ice Cream Radar

Today, New York City is slated to have a high of 91 degrees. The blistering heat may not have you jumping for joy, but it is the perfect weather to cool off with ice cream.

While you may have missed the opportunity to celebrate National Ice Cream day—Sunday, July 19^th— don’t fret, New York City is packed with ice cream parlors to celebrate the joyous day all summer long.

But where is the closest location to you? The Ice Cream Radar is here to answer that question. With a simple click of your mouse, the Ice Cream Radar will zero in on your location, scan the surrounding neighborhood and find you the closest ice cream shop.

If you’re a frozen yogurt kind of person, in addition to ice cream, the uber-cool radar also lists fro-yo locations.

For anyone who resides in the dark ages, without a smart device that is, you can text 9292-COOL-ME with your New York City address or location to get a reply with the nearest cold treat.

The Ice Cream radar was created by the WNYC data news team, one of New York City’s flagship public radio stations. Ice cream parlors’ locations are determined using the Yelp API, along with Foursquare API and New York City restaurant inspection records. The hand icon was created by Chang Kim from the Noun Project.
