British designer Neil Barrett has opened his largest shop-in-shop at luxury London retailer Harrods today. The 480-square-foot space will sit on the lower ground floor in contemporary collections.
“I’m a non-color person, and I like to surround myself with a combination of the fluid and the linear,” said the designer of the concept behind the store, which was designed by his friend and long-time collaborator Zaha Hadid. To honour Barrett’s vision, Hadid used materials such as Corian, nickel, velvet, Ecosuede and mirror. This is just one in a latest number of openings for Barrett, whose business up until now has been mainly wholesale. This month will see him launch a store at Galaxy in Macau, whilst come the autumn he will be debuting in China, in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. “I don’t like rushing into anything, and I’m happy to grow gradually,” said Barrett to WWD of his plans to expand the label.
Barrett’s latest opening at Harrods sees him join the likes of Balmain, Givenchy, Valentino and Lanvin, with which he will be sharing the space. Meanwhile, the luxury London retailer has been expanding their menswear presence slowly but steadily. A new menswear denim gallery has been in the pipeline for some months now and is currently open for business, with the likes of denim heavyweights Diesel, AG Jeans, Nudie Jeans, J Brand and True Religion all selling in the space. There will also be additional exclusive collections from brands such as 7 for all Mankind, Citizens of Humanity and Jacob Cohen, while the gallery is set to nestle between the international and contemporary men’s selections.
