Haute Event: Sugar Ray Leonard’s 5th Annual “Big Fighters, Big Cause” Charity Boxing Night
The stars were out at the Santa Monica Pier on Tuesday night to watch Slava Shabransky and Paul Vasquez, Luis Grajeda vs Said el Harrak and Charles Martin vs Rafael Pedro spar for a cause at Sugar Ray Leonard’s 5th Annual “Big Fighters, Big Cause” Charity Boxing Night.
Over 30,000 square feet of the pier was transformed into a festive, fight-friendly event space that included a three-bout PROAM fight card commissioned by the California State Athletic Commission and USA Boxing, as well as a world-class live auction and silent auction display featuring iconic memorabilia and other one-of-a-kind items and experiences. This is the Sugar Ray Leonard Foundation’s annual fundraising event that raises funds and awareness for Juvenile Diabetes Research, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Attendees included Usher, whom raced straight over from winning The Voice to attend the event. The recording artist will be playing Sugar Ray in Roberto Duran’s upcoming biopic, Hands of Stone.
Additional guests included legendary boxers Mike Tyson, Oscar de la Hoya, Shane Mosley and Thomas Hearns as well as Anthony Anderson, Craig Robinson, David James Elliott Jake Steinfeld, Johnny Gill, Keenen Ivory Wayans and Tommy Chong.
The fight card results are as follows:
o Charles Martin (WINNER) vs Rafael Pedro, Heavyweight – 10 rounds (Main Event), Martin knocked out Pedro in the fourth round.
o Luis Grajeda (WINNER) vs Said el Harrak, Junior Middleweight – 8 Rounds (Undercard), Grajeda won in an eight round split decision.
o Vyacheslav “Slava” Shabranskyy (WINNER) vs Paul Vasquez, Light Heavyweight – 8 Rounds (Undercard), Shabranskyy declared winner after first round.
