Haute 100 LA Update: Jimmy Kimmel Gets 2-Year Contract Extension
Jimmy Kimmel is staying at ABC, at least for the next few years.
The network has given the late night host a two-year contract extension, keeping him at ABC through January 2017.
The other networks have recently undergone a series of changes in programming and hosting duties. Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers have both taken on hosting duties; longtime late night host Jay Leno has retired, while his CBS counterpart, David Letterman, has announced his imminent 2015 retirement. Stephen Colbert will replace Letterman, while fellow longtime late night host Craig Ferguson has also announced his plans to leave CBS. The bid to keep Kimmel is proof, for ABC at least, that there is comfort in consistency.
But this decision is not just based on comfort factor alone: Kimmel’s ratings are high. In the key 18-49 demo, the 46-year-old comedian pulls in 917,000 viewers. As of February, Kimmel’s first complete season at 11:35 p.m. was up 28 percent over last year’s numbers.
