Saturday Night Congo Fever

Guess what? Fondazione Prada is opening a Double Club in East London. Picture a West-meets-Congo-themed pop-up restaurant, dance club, and gallery space all created in a beautified old dump of a nightclub. Last night’s opening lived up to its eclectic hype with lots of champagne, oysters, and art-world pizzazz, paired with Congolese party favors which included a goat-meat barbecue, plastic patio chairs, and African beer.

The usual fashion-world guest-list attended the event, which included Alexander Mcqueen, who was seen fighting for a table in the dining room and Katie Grand getting down to some poppin’ Congolese beats. When the clock struck midnight, fashion designer Pam Hogg sang a few songs to a crowd of international potpourri, highlighted by some Congolese girls with multicolored highlights.

The fleeting venue, which will be open for six months, was designed by Belgian artist Carsten Holler, best known for his gigantic metal slides at the Tate Modern and for a slide that runs from Miuccia Prada’s desk to her car park.
