News | October 16, 2013

World Cup Aspen

Aspen is one of two international locales vying to host the 2017 World Cup ski races, competing against Lenzerheide, Switzerland for the honor. The event would bring the best men and women in the sport to Aspen for a total of nine events: slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom and downhill with the men and women each competing, plus the coed team event that consists of four to six team members, with at least two men and two women on the team. Vail was the last American venue to host the World Cup, in 1997.

Aspen held a world championship race as far back as 1950, and more recently has hosted the annual women’s world cup race on the Lift 1A hill the weekend after Thanksgiving. The World Cup race would take place in March 2017.
