Marilyn Monroe’s Iconic Subway Grate Photo On Display In Times Square

News | December 21, 2012

The famous snapshot of Marilyn Monroe standing above a NYC subway grate — and her skirt billowing in the breeze — is on display outside the Times Square subway station. The super-sized version of Sam Shaw‘s iconic image is part of an exhibit that includes eight other Monroe pictures on view inside the 42nd Street-Bryant Park station, reports the Associated Press.

Shaw shot the subway grate photo for the 1955 film “The Seven Year Itch.” He took the other pictures in 1957.

The exhibit, which opened today and runs for one year, is part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Arts for Transit program.
