Hermès Handbag Heaven at Bonhams
On November 28th, Bonham’s Jewelry sale in Knightsbridge, London will be auctioning off a private collection of eighteen iconic Hermès handbags, including ‘Kelly’ and ‘Birkin’ bags. This sale is one of the most anticipated sales since the success of Bonhams May sale that made a total of £562,750, with bags greatly exceeding their estimate from bidders over the phone and online.
November auction will feature an exclusive red crocodile Birkin bag ranging from £28,000 – 30,000, a mini miel crocodile Kelly bag estimated at £15,000 – 20,000, several Constance bags, a custom-made special order Birkin bag and a blue ostrich Bolide bag ranging at £6,000 – 8,000.
The history of the ‘Kelly’ bag goes all the way back to 1956, when Grace Kelly was seen carrying the leather bag ‘Sac à dépêche’ to hide her pregnancy, just after she had become Princess of Monaco, in which the bag was called the ‘Kelly’, after photographs of the young star surfaced around the world.
Whereas the ‘Birkin’ received its name after the chairman of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas created a black leather bag for British actress Jane Birkin in 1984. Bonham’s will also feature a chocolate brown crocodile Birkin bag that will estimate at £20,000 – 25,000.

After the resounding success of our last sale of all sixty-four Hermès handbags from a private collection, it is an incredible opportunity to offer a second beautiful collection and we are expecting a lot of excitement around the sale,” Claire Browne, Head of the Textiles department commented.
