Halekulani kicks off New Spa menu with Seashell Facial

The posh Halekulani is undergoing a multimillion-dollar makeover to its guest rooms, suites and restaurants.

And though its spa, SpaHalekulani, isn’t slated to get renovated this year — it got a makeover about five years ago — its menu is being updated. And it will include a new signature facial.

Starting this month it unveiled La Iku Facial and Pedicure, a luxurious 105-minute treatment featuring the healing powers of handpicked cone- and fan-shaped shells that “pick” and “scoop” the energy blockage along the spine and neck

The treatment starts with the hotel’s signature foot-pounding ritual on its outdoor lanai. Then you move into a dimly lit treatment room, with the kind of relaxing slack-key Hawaiian music and soothing lights you’d get during a massage — not necessarily a facial.

“We want to get you in the zone even before we start the facial,” the therapist says.

You lie facedown on a treatment table, as the therapist gives you a gentle back massage. Then, using the seashells, she “picks” and “scoops” the energy blockage along the spine. The idea is she’s removing and releasing the bad energy, allowing the body to find its own natural balance.

Then you flip over to receive the facial, which uses products from the Pure & True Organic Line made in Kailua on Oahu, on your back.

“This is a very gentle facial,” the therapist says. “No extractions, no bright lights. It’s a more personal experience.”

This facial can be paired with the spa’s waterless pedicure, which takes an additional 75 minutes.

Cost is $230 for 105 minutes, $330 for 180 minutes (includes pedicure).

It’s one of several new treatments on the updated menu, which will be released this summer.
