“Lost Generation” Artist, Chaim Soutine’s Major Works to Be Auctioned at Sotheby’s

Paris in the 1920’s was a Mecca for expatriate artists, such as famed writers Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald along with artists Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and expressionist Chaim Soutine.  It was during this time in Paris that these artists created their most famous and influential works.

Today, their artistic achievements are still in high demand.  For example at this years Sotheby’s Impressionism and Modern Art Sale, on May 2, features two of Soutine’s paintings, which are expected to make around $13 million.

The Russian artist’s most famous work, “Le Chasseur De Chez Maxim’s,” depicts an unknown man dressed in a striking red uniform with a red cap, behind him is a dark backdrop, allowing the red to really stick out in the painting.  That portrait, along with Soutine’s “Le Chausseur,” is expected to sell for around $4 million to $6 million each at the Sotheby’s.

Soutine’s work is not the only famous “Lost Generation” painting on sale at the famed art house on May 2.  Picasso’s “Femme Assise Dans Une Fauteuil” is expected to rake in $20 to $30 million.
