Cutty Sark Set To Reopen
After nearly five years, the Cutty Sark has decided to reopen to the public, after being gutted by a horrific fire. Since 1954, the Cutty Sark has been very important as a tourist attraction of Greenwich, so with the reopening this will allow tourists to feel welcomed, especially with the upcoming Summer Olympic games.
However, the fire damage was extensive so plans to reopen in 2010 were postponed, as well as another delay to reopen in spring 2011. The estimated £50m restoration has taken another additional year, but it’s official that the Cutty Sark will open April 26.
Surprisingly, work had started prior to the fire on the 143-year old tea clipper, but the blaze itself caused damage worth £10m. Therefore, because of the restoration which began, many original fittings were not damage and were safe in storage. According to the Cutty Sark Trust, the fire fighters were very “heroic,” and “There was amazingly little damage to the ship’s original fabric.”
