Most Expensive Work of Art Ever Sold at Auction

Some of the artwork being sold at Sotheby’s modern art auction was expected to rake in millions of dollars, but the results exceeded all expectations. Most of the artwork fetched more than their estimated prices. The shocker was the winning bid for the piece that had many art connoisseurs and collectors buzzing–the rare life-size sculpture, L’Homme qui marche I by Alberto Giacometti. It was expected to fetch $29.1 million, but instead raked in a whopping $104.3million! This high amount marks it the most expensive work of art ever sold at an auction. What’s even more surprising is that it only took eight minutes to reach this enormous price, sold to the winning bidder over the phone. The piece was the only cast of the walking man made during Giacometti’s lifetime that has ever come to auction.
