An Interview with Ara Starck

The world of design is certainly well aware of Philippe Starck, whose wide array of works fully encompasses what is referred to as “New Design” style. And Haute Living has featured him in many capacities (the cover of Haute Living’s September/October 2005 issue, as well as his work with Ian Schrager as the designer of many of Schrager’s ultra-luxurious hotel projects, such as the Mondrian, the Hudson, the St. Martins Lane, the Paramount, and Miami’s historic Delano).

But Starck’s daughter, Ara Starck, a 30-year-old humbly quiet painter, has now stepped into the spotlight, collaborating with her father to redo Paris’ Meurice hotel, including a 1,500-square-foot painting on the ceiling of the hotel’s restaurant, Le Dali. Starck has also been involved in a variety of other projects, wearing many hats, much like her father.

Jeffries Blackerby interviewed the young Starck for New York Times’ “The Moment,” and it is surprisingly impressive, especially learning that Ara was commissioned to do the work after submitting art samples anonymously.

Clearly, hard work, innovation, and success run in the Starck family.
