New York’s Vanishing Mom-And-Pop Stores
The mom-and-pop stores that line the busy streets of New York City are slowly but surely disappearing. Authors James and Karla Murray shot photos of bakeries, delis and record store across the city that are either closed or fighting to survive.
James and Karla Murray’s book STORE FRONT: The Disappearing Face of New York takes you on a tour of the city’s most colorful and charismatic mom-and-pop store fronts. The duo told Business Insider, “when we wrote the introduction to our book in late 2008, only about one-third of the stores we had photographed were gone.” Now, three years later, half have disappeared.
The photos were shot with a 35mm camera to “retain an old-school feel”.
James and Karla Murray are professional photographers and authors who specialize in urban and low-light photography using both film and digital formats. In addition to their bestselling and critically acclaimed book STORE FRONT: The Disappearing Face of New York (Gingko Press 2009), they also have graffiti publications, Broken Windows (Gingko Press 2010), Burning New York (Gingko Press 2006) and Miami Graffiti (Prestel 2009) have set the standard for urban documentation.
