After a 60-plus-year hiatus, one-time dining institution Jimmy’s Kitchen has recently re-opened in Shanghai at the Jin Jiang Hotel in the former French concession area, where it is serving up old favourites such as beer battered fish and chips, corn-fed chicken kiev, and poached prawn cocktail.
The restaurant, which was opened in 1924 by a U.S. Army officer stationed in China, was one of the first restaurants to serve international fare in the city and remained in operation until 1948.

In addition to classic continental cuisine, Jimmy’s was renowned for its broiler-seared steaks cooked on an imported U.S. broiler, which are now a mainstay of the current menu. Desserts such as Jimmy’s signature Baked Alaska, Bread and Butter Pudding and Warm Chocolate Fondant look ready to become popular items for another 60 years.
“We are delighted to return home to Shanghai and bring back food from a bygone era. Jimmy’s Kitchen is more than a restaurant; it’s a place full of memories for generations of diners. You are guaranteed a brilliant meal and you’ll no doubt stay well into the night, it’s so relaxing it feels just like home,” says Grant D. Baird, Operations Director of Epicurean Group, which also manages its sister restaurant in Hong Kong.
