Haute Art: Honolulu Academy of Arts Presents Renowned Collectors’ Gifted Art

News | April 9, 2011

In 2008 American art collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel — who amassed a collection of nearly 5,000 works in their one-bedroom New York City apartment — launched a national gifts program that gave 50 modern art pieces to a selected art institution in each of the 50 states, including Hawaii.

The Honolulu Academy of Arts unveiled its 50 works — by renowned artists including Robert Barry, Bill Jensen, Mark Kostabi and Edda Renouf — in an exhibition that runs through May. The exhibit, “Exquisitely Modern: 50 Works from Herbert and Dorothy Vogel,” is comprised largely of minimalist, post-minimalist and conceptual drawings (shown above).

“It is a comprehensive yet intimate survey of avant-garde moments in the mid-20th century,” said Theresa Papanikolas, the academy’s curator of European and American art and curator of this exhibition.

The national gifts program, “The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States,” — along with the National Gallery of Art, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services — distributed 2,500 works from the couple’s collection of contemporary art through the country.

General admission is $10. For more information about the exhibition, call (808) 532-6091 or visit Honolulu Academy of Arts online.
