Nobu Is Checking Into the Caribbean: A 50-Room Nobu Hotel Is Coming to San Juan, Puerto Rico
Nobu Hotel and Restaurant San Juan, a 50-room luxury hotel with a Nobu restaurant and rooftop bar, is set to open in Puerto Rico in 2028.
Black cod miso is getting a Caribbean passport. Nobu Hospitality, the brand founded by Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and Meir Teper, announced on September 30 that it will open Nobu Hotel and Restaurant San Juan in 2028, its first property in Puerto Rico: an intimate, 50-room luxury hotel with a signature Nobu restaurant and bar at street level and a rooftop lounge and bar above, developed with KTT in what Nobu calls one of the region’s most storied neighborhoods.

The Hotel
San Juan has a personality all its own: centuries of history, pastel-washed colonial streets, a buzzing gallery scene, a celebrated waterfront and a food culture that refuses to be anyone else’s. The new Nobu promises to honor that character while layering in the brand’s contemporary design and famously understated brand of luxury.
“Puerto Rico has long been one of the Caribbean’s most compelling destinations,” says Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hospitality, who frames the opening as a chance to become part of the city’s fabric rather than simply arrive in it. KTT managing partner Joakim Lehmkuhl puts it even more simply: “Few places in the Caribbean combine culture, history, and energy the way San Juan does.”
At 50 rooms, the hotel will be decidedly intimate, with service inspired by omotenashi, the Japanese art of anticipating a guest’s needs before they’ve said a word, and curated experiences designed to connect guests to Puerto Rican culture rather than wall them off from it. That’s exactly how the best new luxury hotels are being built right now (see our roundup of the year’s best new luxury hotels): smaller, more personal and deeply rooted in place.
For a brand whose restaurants have long been as much a reason to travel as its hotels, San Juan is an inspired next address, and the island has every reason to roll out the welcome mat.

The Restaurant and Rooftop
Naturally, dinner is the main event. Nobu Matsuhisa’s cooking, that era-defining marriage of Japanese technique and Peruvian flair, is what built an empire that now stretches across restaurants, hotels and residences on five continents. In San Juan, the signature restaurant and bar will sit at street level, giving the property a pulse beyond its overnight guests and, inevitably, the city a new see-and-be-seen table.
Then comes the rooftop lounge and bar, the obvious next stop after the black cod: a second stage for cocktails, Caribbean breezes and the kind of conversation that runs late. Room design, interiors and the specifics of the guest experiences are still under wraps. But the ingredients are already promising: an intimate hotel, a signature Nobu, a rooftop with a view and a city that knows exactly how to draw a crowd. Come 2028, San Juan will have one more address worth dressing up for.
