Twelve of the World’s Best Bars Are Taking Over One Athens Room for One Night Only
On Nov. 2, Avra at Four Seasons Astir Palace and The Clumsies bring 12 bars from 11 cities to Athens for Athens Bar Week.
For one night of Athens Bar Week, Avra and The Clumsies are packing six Four Seasons bars and six independents into a single downtown address. Pace yourself. (You won’t.)

I’ll admit I’ve built entire trips around a single cocktail. (A passport is a perfectly reasonable bar accessory.) On November 2, Athens is sparing everyone the airfare. Avra, the bar at Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens, and The Clumsies, the downtown independent that helped put Athens on the global cocktail map, are bringing 12 bars from 11 cities to Fouar Restaurant and Bar for one gloriously crowded night.
The format is simple and slightly diabolical: six Four Seasons bars, six independents, six cocktail stations, with PATRÓN Tequila behind the whole operation. Call it the world’s most efficient bar crawl. No jet lag, no layovers, and a commute measured in footsteps.
Now, the roster. Representing the hotel camp: BKK Social Club from Bangkok, VIRTÙ from Tokyo, Stilla from Milan, Fifty Mils from Mexico City, Saikindō from Abu Dhabi and Avra itself. Flying the independent flag: The Clumsies, Purovōku Project from Thessaloniki, FOCO from Barcelona, Shakerato from Amsterdam, TAG from Kraków and Torto from Porto.
It’s a Monday. Rearrange accordingly.
What intrigues me isn’t the name-dropping (although, fine, it’s excellent name-dropping). It’s the collision. Hotel bars and independent bars play entirely different games. One is often the reason you book the room; the other is the reason you book the flight back. Put that polish and that personality behind the same stretch of counter and you get something rarer than a great drink: the people who usually throw the party, finally getting to crash someone else’s.
“For me, the magic is in the mix – different styles and different stories but one shared passion,” says Avra bar manager Nikos Tachmazis. He’s right, and anyone who has watched two great bartenders size each other up across a bar top knows exactly what he means.
The timing is no accident, either. The night lands early in Athens Bar Week, which runs November 1 through 5, just ahead of the Athens Bar Show on November 3 and 4. So if your itineraries tend to begin with a dinner reservation and end with whatever the bartender insists you try next, early November in Athens has just become non-negotiable.
Twelve bars. One address. Your only real dilemma is where to start. (My advice: wherever the line is shortest. Strategy matters.)
