Bending Over Backwards: Camille Fishel’s Debut Series Brought New York’s Best Together in One Room

On Tuesday, September 22nd, Zero Bond hosted the kind of evening that New York does well when the right people are in the right room for the right reason. Artist Camille Fishel — a former Haute Living cover star whom we featured last year as she stepped fully into her creative life — gathered family, friends, and an impressive cross-section of the city’s cultural world for a pre-Armory cocktail party celebrating Bending Over Backwards, her inaugural oil-on-canvas series and her debut at The Armory Show.

All eight paintings from the series were on view that night, four of which are now at The Armory Show at Booth 128. The introduction came from Adam Cohen — Gagosian gallery director and the founder of project space A Hug From the Art World, who has championed the series from the beginning. “The love and support I felt after sharing something so vulnerable and so close to my heart is hard to put into words. After all, I’m just a girl—and that’s exactly what my series Bending Over Backwards attempts to translate,” Fishel wrote. Fishel then spoke about the work herself, noting that it examines the different ways women are put into boxes. It was a rare moment at an art event when the artist’s voice clarified something rather than simply adding ceremony.

Fishel was joined by her longtime partner, Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin, alongside an evening that drew Gayle King, Karl-Anthony Towns, Russell Wilson, Wendi Murdoch, Keegan-Michael Key, George Condo, Rashid Johnson, Gary Vaynerchuk, Zack Bia, Zero Bond founder Scott Sartiano, Noah Tepperberg and Melissa Wood-Tepperberg, Zara Terez Tisch, Emily Austin, Michelle Hellman, and Sophie Elgort.
