In true Kardashian/Jenner fashion, business mogul and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian West just took to Instagram to announce her latest business venture called “SKIMS”—a new line of undergarments that enhance women’s shape, created by Kardashian West herself. The line was originally called “Kimono;” however, the reality television star received backlash from various users and groups on the internet, citing cultural appropriation for using the name of a traditional Japanese garment for women as the name of a shape wear brand. Even the mayor of Kyoto, Daisaku Kadokawa got involved, stating, “I am writing this letter to convey our thoughts on Kimono and ask you to re-consider your decision of using the name Kimono in your trademark.” Others were unbothered by the name, but Kardashian West still decided to switch the name to SKIMS, ahead of the brand’s upcoming September 10th launch.

“My fans and followers are a huge inspiration to me – I’m always listening to their feedback and opinions, and am so grateful they shared their ideas for a new brand name,” began Kardashian West on her Instagram post. “After much thought and consideration, I’m excited to announce the launch of @SKIMS Solutionwear™ coming September 10. I love the idea that the pieces will be the closest thing to someone’s skin, skimming with amazingly soft and supportive fabrics which accentuate the best parts of our bodies.  Available in sizes XXS – 5XL, SKIMS Solutionwear™ is for every body.
