Penn Masala Thrills Dubai
Penn Masala, the world’s first and premier South Asian a cappella group, recently brought down the house with their performance at the DUCTAC (Mall of the Emirates).
Founded in 1996, Penn Masala was started by four Indian American undergraduates in search of music that represented their identity. You will never see the same members perform again because students graduate every year and newer ones are inducted in.
They have performed for world leaders including President Obama who invited them to perform at the White House for Diwali and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Last year, they had a clever cameo in USD 70-million dollar grossing Pitch Perfect 2 as the Naan Stops that also won them an American Music Award.
Today, the majority of the group members are Indian Americans raised in Indian households.However, Penn Masala is welcoming to members of different cultural backgrounds — like Brendan McManus, a white Wharton junior who doesn’t speak Hindi but liked the chemistry of the group and joined.
As the first group in the world to bring the sounds of the Indian subcontinent to a cappella, it has consistently been at the forefront of South Asian-Western fusion ever since.
