If you’re a fashion-loving Angeleno, the name “Fred Segal” is going to be very, very familiar to you. Fred Segal has been an iconic shopping destination since 1961, a destination rooted in Hollywood culture and synonymous with L.A. laid-back luxury. Known for discovering and launching many famous fashion and beauty brands, Fred Segal was a pioneer of experiential retail. Nowadays, though the Fred Segal brand is owned by Sandow and Evolution Media Partners (a venture of Hollywood talent agency CAA, private equity firm TPG Growth and Participant Media), it continues to expand beyond the scope of space alone with its first-ever apparel collection. FRED by Fred Segal consists of men’s and women’s core must-have pieces, ranging from distressed T-shirts to designer denim to cool cashmere, still offering the quintessential casual but upscale L.A. style.

FRED’s designer and Vice President, Shaun Hurley, has a fashion pedigree: he was formerly a founding partner of Genetic Denim. When creating FRED, Hurley used the Los Angeles landscape as the source of inspiration. “I took cues from the hidden gems and secret spots of LA,” says Hurley.“FRED has special stitching and hidden brand elements designed to be discovered. As the city of LA unfolds to those in the know, so does FRED.”

Designed with meticulous attention to detail, the collection is intended to make each piece a favorite, can’t live without item. Its inspiration is the 70s—a time when musicians and celebrities would emerge from Laurel Canyon and go to Fred Segal to socialize and collaborate with other freethinking artists, much like they do today. The collection is versatile, with layers that make it accessible and easy-to-wear with many looks. The overall feel reflects Fred Segal’s laid back lifestyle approach to casual luxury.

A majority of fabrications used in FRED are custom-made for the brand. The T-shirt is an exclusive tri- blend that Hurley created to achieve a soft and completely wearable garment, while three different denim fabrics developed in Japan, are used to create a rigid jean that has the comfort of a stretch.

FRED collection spans men’s, women’s and children. Here, take a look at some of our favorite pieces.
