UAE Royalty Joins High Society to Celebrate British Polo Day Dubai

On 28 March, British Polo Day Dubai entertained over 450 VIP guests and thousands of picnickers at the prestigious Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. The event took place over a quintessentially British lunch and traditional afternoon tea. Spectators enjoyed a thrilling day of polo, followed by a Zaeem Jamal fashion show under the stars and a VIP after party at Dubai’s hottest night-spot XL Beach Club.

Among those who attended were Her Highness Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Mohammed Al Habtoor, British Ambassador Dominic Jermey, British HM Consul General Edward Hobart, The Right Honorable Nicholas Soames MP, Sir Maurice and Lady Audrey Flanagan, Jeremy Hackett, fashion designer Zaeem Jamal, celebrity entrepreneur Hugo Taylor, art dealer Frederik Ferrier, and Dubai TV personality Uma Ghosh.

VIP guests were greeted with a Taittinger reception and an entertaining Hackett Camel Polo Cup match, featuring members of the elite Cavalry and Guards Regiments of the British Army. Following their triumph at last week’s British Polo Day Abu Dhabi, Captain Kit Philp once again led the InterContinental London Park Lane Cavalry team to a five – one victory against Gaucho Guards.

Next to mount the camels were Eton College and Harrow who provided the compelling backdrop to British Polo Day Dubai’s quintessential British lunch on the Club Terrace. This Prince’s Cup match saw the Eton Team easily defeat the Harrow team by three goals to nil.

Following lunch, players from Oxford and Cambridge went head-to-head in the Gaucho Cup. It was a thrilling and fiercely-competitive game in which the Jaeger-LeCoultre Cambridge team eventually won seven goals to one against the Oxford Group Holdings Oxford team.

The day culminated in the landmark Land Rover Thesiger Trophy, closely fought between the British Exiles andHabtoor Polo, our hosts and the generous patrons who have firmly put the UAE on the global polo ‘map’. This was the sixth time that Habtoor Polo have battled it out for the prestigious prize – and, once again, the home team Habtoor Polo emerged triumphant with an eight – five victory.
