Just after 1 p.m. today, Silverpeak Apothecary opened its doors to sell legalized marijuana becoming one of two stores–along with STASH–to sell the first pot in the city of Aspen for recreational use. Excited customers were greeted by a row of registers, a guide to different kinds of pot and a price list, which starts at $25 to $30 a gram. On the wall, glass cupboards held a variety of strains and edibles so customers could a preview of what they could purchase. At Silverpeak, security guards monitored the line, checking IDs and pacing the amount of customers allowed inside.

On Tuesday, Pitkin County Commissioners gave the proper approvals for both Silverpeak and STASH to move ahead with legal sales. Recreational marijuana use for adults over 21 became legal in Colorado on Jan. 1, but it came down to local jurisdictions to have the last say on whether pot could be sold in certain areas. The shops are the second and third to open in the Roaring Fork Valley; Doctor’s Garden in Carbondale has been in business Jan. 15.

The Silverpeak Apothecary is located at 520 E. Cooper Ave. and STASH  at 300 Aspen Airport Business Center, Suite B.
