Elton John is finally walking down the aisle.

The 67-year-old musical icon and longtime partner David Furnish will wed in an English registry office this May.

The couple have been dating for over two decades and have been in a civil partnership for eight years. Now that gay marriage is legal in the U.K., it seemed important that they make their union legal on paper.

Furnish broke the news on Friday at John’s  67th birthday party at Fizz Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. “We don’t feel the need to take an extra step legally,” he told the He told the Las Vegas Review-Journal . “But since we’re committed for life, we feel it’s really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation. We all live by example.”

He added: “We’re living in extraordinary times. My god, 20 years ago, when I started seeing Elton, if you asked me if I’d be able to get married, if I’d be able to have children, it was unthinkable, literally unimaginable.”

Though John is famous for his grand balls and lavish parties, the union will be simple, heartfelt and very, very small. The ceremony will only be attended by John, Furnish, their two children — Elijah, 3, and Zachary, 16 months — as well as a few select friends.
